I am considering buying two 4870X2's and running them in crossfire on an MSI 790FX GD-70.
1. Can you crossfire those X2's on that board?
2. Is a 1000 watt coolermaster psu up the task of powering them?
3. Is it worth spending $200 for the cards?

Thanks in advance for any replies

1. Yes
2. Yes (definative answer depending on model)
3. No. They are getting old and run really hot, and will not perform that great in games that don't use CFX. You can get a 6950 for a little more than $230....

Well, the list of games that don't use CrossFire is pretty much nonexistent now. I think getting one card makes sense, but getting two doesn't. With the newest drivers, the card seems to be performing 70% higher on average in comparison to single at 1680x1050 and 1920x1200, which is VERY good. Getting two cards doesn't really make sense, though, because the power consumption is gonna be through the roof and the performance benefits are gonna be much smaller. You're looking at 20-30% higher performance than single 4870X2. And, of course, recommending a 6950 instead if you're looking at bang-for-buck is pretty nonsensical. The 4870X2, which can be had for $100 for now, is the same speed.

When did the OP mention budget? I offered a 'better' alternative for the same amount of money the OP was going to dump on a potentialy more expensive investment. To the cfx comment I was mostly talking about 4 way....

Thanks anyway.

It doesn't matter if he mentioned budget. I'm just stating facts.
