4890 - slow in l4d2?

XFX radeon, OC'd to 975/1150.

I've taken the settings down to 1280x1024 and turned off all of the AA - filtering mode = bilinear, vertical sync = disabled. This'll net me about 200 fps standing still.

If I turn all of those up I get about 40 fps...this really doesn't seem right?

My buddy has all things maxed and is at 1900x1080 on a 4870 1gb and is getting a ton more fps then I.

Btw - this seems to be the only game i'm having this problem with. If it is a problem.

Any ideas? I really didn't know if I should post this here, or in the pc games thread (this seemed more appropriate).

Thanks much.

Are you and your friend using the same Catalyst?
yeah - we both have the most recent
How did you install the latest one? Did you completely remove the previous one, booted up safe mode and cleaned everything with Driver Sweeper? If yes, then the 9.11 has a problem with that game. Go back to 9.10.
I definitely did it the slacker way, just installed over it. That's a no-no I imagine?

No because in 5/10 cases you have performance problems. Please uninstall everything, reboot in safemode, use this tool :

Then install 9.11 again. If the problem persists, redo the procedure and install 9.10.

1) Lower the OC on the GPU
2) Check cooling, set fan throttle to constant 100% via rivatuner
Alright, i'll give the uninstall a try.

ATI catalyst install manager - correct? Sorry for the nubs questions.

Yea I have a 4830 in my sig-rig at the moment, getting constant 60fps at 1680x1050 everything maxed. A 4890 should be destroying the game on the OP's setup, and the 4850 you have should be plenty as well.

I should note during explosions (like from a grenade launcher), the smoke causes my FPS to drop to 30, but that is the only time it drops.

Yes uninstall normally. Boot safemode and run the tool i gave you. Select ATI, clean and you are good to go.

this^^^^
there is something wrong , i get way more than that with everthing turned up
Uninstalled - used driver sweeper in safe mode, reinstalled.

Still 40-60 fps =/
Turn off Vsync.
I don't understand

If you delete the video card drivers, won't the screen just...go blank? Or will windows use its default drivers automatically?

That's too high!

975 OC on my 4890 will crash in the new Stalker demo, 970 would sometimes pass and 965 is the sweet spot... so I went with 960 OC.

I've read a few reviews that had 4980s at 975, but I doubt they even stress tested them.

Windows has 20 million gagillion drivers. It will load a driver for you to use and if you are connected to the internet it will give you a better driver. So no, the screen whon't go blank ... only for a few seconds. After you uninstall ... you reinstall the ATI drivers because of their advanced funtionality.

Toxic Adam,

My second system has CFX HD4890 XXX and I keep them at 1 GHz / 4.6 GHz and they work fine in every game, including left 4 dead. So yeah, there are cards out there capable of high clocks without problems.

Put the card on stock please and try the same procedure but with catalyst 9.10. Also select Triple Buffering in Control Center.

Do you uninstall CCC as well, or just delete the drivers via device manager
uninstalled CCC. The OC is via overdrive auto-tune.
