4890 to 5770

I know this is considered a downgrade but its minimal if you consider the fps loss. Is it beneficial if I swap my 4890 for a 5770 and then go Xfire later on when I'll be able to upgrade my mobo and CPU?

If you are looking for DX11 and some crazy ass overclocking head room, then yes. If not, then stick with what you have. and upgrade to 2 4890s. But to be honest, 2 5770s are equal to a 5870
I downgraded from a 4890 Vapor-X to a 5770 and I have never been happier

If you're thinking about doing this then your mind is already made up.

It uses less power, has DX11 and the performance loss very small

I did a Resident Evil 5 bench at 1920 x 1200, 8AA, 16AF

4890 Vapor-X (950/1200) got 87fps
5770 Unlocked (1000/1400) got 83 fps

You do the math

hmm.. so if CF 5770 = 5870, then a CF 4890 would be tad better than the 5870 without the DX11? Tho, with 5000 series premature drivers, who gave us the right to tell.
2 x 5770 scales far better in crossfire then 2 x 4890...

5770 crossfire is the better option!!
proof?
I went from a 4890 to a 5870 to a 275 co-op to a 5770.
Haha I'm gunna CF here soon and be back up to the 5870 performance.

If you are planning to crossfire, the 5770 is the way to go.

If you are definitely going for crossfire soon, then yeah, it's a good up/side-grade.

5770s while a bit slower, are much cooler running and massively less power-hungry.
It's up to you, though I would stick with the 4890 and in a year when dx11 is more used, you will probably be able to pick up a 5850 for around that price.
I can confirm that 2 4890s score better than 1 5870. For example, with my 4890 XXX working at 1 GHz/4.6GHz and CPU at 4.0 I get over 22000 in Vantage. I would get more but for some reason, my C0/C1 won't boot at anything over 4.1
. I tried everything. Things change when you add the second 5870. My other CFX setup, 2 x 5870 XXX at 920MHz / 5.4 GHz has almost 50 % more performance in Vantage than the 4890s. Let's be honest, we are comparing two different generations. For what is worth the 4890 was for a long time the best bang for buck card. Add another one for CFX and you had a smashing gaming pc.

Things have changed when the 5770 came out. This seems to be the sweetspot for CFX. If you aim for that, 5770 will satisfy you because of the better scalability, DX11 and better architecture. If I were you, I would ask myself this question : How long will I wait to purchase the second card? If the answer is not long, then yeah, I advise you get the 5770, if you wait for quite some time, you are wasting your money. Technology evolves and why should you get another 5770 when ATI will take out another card that will perform better and will have a good price? Better to jump from a 4890 to a 6XXX card than to jump from a 5XXX to a 6XXX. I will upgrade my 4890XXX cards next summer. I want the waters to calm down and see how DX11 fares till then. At the moment, CFX 4890 plays everything and to be frank, lack of DX11 won't make my games give me an error message : "Please use a DX 11 card to play this game".

Don't drink the DX11 kool-aid yet.

Agreed-ish, BUT: the drastically reduced power consumption and heat output vs. performance might be reason enough. Especially if you have hot summers/high power bills.

loluondrugs?
Considering the WR for 4x 5770s is 28k, 45k is some straight up bull****.

And 2x cards only get 18k.

If you're only gaming and are concerned over power consumption go for the 5770s, but if you want pure speed the 4890 would be your best bet. Clock for clock they're faster, and if you dont mind $2 on your power bill the 4890 would be the way to go.

in crossfire in can see the point.but as far as running just one they look pretty weak to me.and the 128 interface makes it even worse.it would be like going back to my 7600gt.imo,the 4890 is just a solid card.but if i were going to buy right now it would be a 5850.thats why my next build will be a matx so i can save money to put it where its needed.now if they ever make a matx board that is true 16x16 id rock to 5770s.
you know for some reason even before i joined these forums i knew that buying 2 5770's would be good. Now this just confirms my purchase!I was originally going to go with a evga gtx260 but once i heard bad company 2 was using dx 11 i had to go with these.

Can't wait til monday i'm getting all my new parts.

All of The parts on the bottom there.
