$500 laptop for statistics

My SO is in need of a $500 (absolutely max budget) laptop that's capable of running statical programs such as SAS and Python. It overall just needs to be snappy. I'm thinking a SSD? What are my options? Thanks for any information given. I'm just overall clue less when it comes to anything pure compute power. Desktop, unfortunately is not an option.

At $500, your options are rather limited especially if you want your laptop to come with a SSD.

The best hardware that you can get for your budget would probably be the Refurbished Surface Pro:

The only downside is the screen size is rather small, which can be an asset (portability) and a liability (everything displayed on screen is small).
