500"GB" is 500,000 "MB" but is acutally 500,000/1024 = 4 882.8125 "MB"

So around real binary 488.2GB. You also lose some to formatting.
yeah i'm aware of that, but i assume i will have less space than that to use. i just got a 160gb hdd, and after formating i only have 131 left (i think) so i was just curious how much is left on a 500gb drive
A 500 Gb drive is actually 500,000,000,000 bytes...leaving you 465 Gb (500bil/1024/1024/1024)
