Hi,

Recently got bit by the computer modding bug again, first time in years, so I put together the system in my sig.

Anyways I've read a few guides on OC'ing, but my BIOS is a piece of crap (I have an MSI TA870+ MB) and everything doesn't feel as straightforward as it seems it should. I've been able to get my cpu up to about 4.3 ghz (as a dual-core) with a lil extra voltage, but after that I either get BSOD or she fails to boot at all, despite the extra voltage. I haven't seen the CPU temps above 32 in win7, and then only when it is under load from nvidia's system test in ntune.

However, I set the safety-reboot in the bios to 75C and the system always reboots after only a few seconds and I have to clear the BIOS.

I have read that my mobo is basically a POS for OC'ing, is that what's holding me back?

Oh and BTW I left CPU-NB freq and voltage alone, just wanted to see how high I could get the clock first.

What gives? I thought I could get over 4.5 ghz easy with this setup.

Thanks for any input!

1. The 500-series procs are capped at 70c. I don't know how you got past 70 without rebooting in the first place. Also, I think the reboots are because it is unstable rather than overheating. Run intel burn test instead of the ***** nvidia software.

2. You are very lucky to get that high (4.3ghz) on a $100 processor.......

3. A lil extra voltage? How much?

That's just the thing; I don't even know how it could possibly get to 70C so I suspect there is something wrong with the protection circuit in the mobo; every time I turn it on, my comp won't turn on more than a few seconds before rebooting.

At the moment it's running around 5.125 but with 4 cores at 4 ghz. I was under the impression these cores can go over 5 ghz? Or do I have to be lucky to get a cpu that can handle that much? I thought I read someone got theirs to over 6 ghz, Also I read 4.5 ghz is safe with good air cooling, so I thought 5 could be doable for someone with an H50.

For that matter, I thought that overheating was the big obstacle to getting higher clock speeds . . .

BTW I don't have to bump up CPUNB freq and voltages to support higher core clock speeds, right?

You can get 4.5ghz out of the chip...i did, as for the auto shutdown i think your mobo is probably shutting off for some power reason. As for 5ghz on water...i dono i never stepped into that territory before and i have never heard of it either. What i have noticed about the 555 though is that the cpu-nb plays a part in how high the core freq can go.

Take my chip for example, to get to 4.5ghz i must have my cpu-nb at 2600mhz with 1.31v any deviation causes instability. But at a lower core speed, say around 4ghz it can get up to 2800mhz with 1.25v just fine. I think u may have to do some tweaking like i did in order to get the max out of the chip...you can always check out the guide in my sig as a reference.

Thanks, I have read your guide before. I will try again with higher NB settings. Would be nice to at least get it to 4.5 as a quad core . . . But I'm thinking my mobo is holding me back because of power issues. Really dunno though. Also it's tricky using your guide as a reference, because as I stated, my BIOS is a pain in the ass and uses different terminology than it seems like everyone else uses, or at least a different process.

Phenoms normally hit a wall between 4ghz - 4.5ghz. Even with a H50 4.5ghz is a high overclock.

What's your voltage and what are you temps at load? Run prime95 or IBT for at least 30 minutes and see what your temps are then.

I haven't done any real stress testing yet; I just wanted to see how high I could get it just to load windows, then maybe t if necessary and go from there. Maybe I'm a it reckless, but I can't help it, I'm inpatient by nature lol

You are aiming for 5GHz?

Not going to happen, on air. You'd need DICE/phase/LN2, and a lot of voltage which, in turn, can degrade the chip.

4.5GHz is an impressive overclock, but it's about as high as you'll get without extreme cooling.

I have an H50 with an extra fan on it. I had read elsewhere that 4.5 was max safe clock on air.

Can't seem to get it to 4.5. Bumped voltage up to 5.5 (max setting in my BIOS without using the overvoltage settings to push it higher), upped NB to 2600 1.3V, got BSOD. backed down core to 4.3 and got it to load windows again. Might play with NB settings more or bump voltage more.

A H50 is in no way anywhere close to a Watercooling setup, it's easily beaten by a high end air cooler.

^^ This...5ghz is out of the question...aim for 4.4 and 4.5ghz and see if you can get that, its gonna take you a long time though with all that tweaking...good luck with it, PM me if you need any help with it.

Also you can try slowing your ram freq. sometimes it helps

Some weird stuff has been happening to windows since I started messin around with the BIOS. For one thing, the WEI doesn't work anymore -- and it still did after my first attempts at OC'ing.

Thanks for the input, I'll definitely give it a shot. I'm just a little frustrated because I had it past four ghz before with the stock cooler and temps seemed fine, then I bought my H50 thinking that I could aim considerably higher with it. Oh well.

I read something akin to that elsewhere; but why?

No idea, the fact that it's a closed system? Mediocre radiator or pump?

I've never used one, so I don't know, but a Venomous X or similar out performs it. To put it in perspective, my i7 loads at 42C in Prime95.

So you know you can get some major instability after about 55C and the max safe temp for these chips is more like 62C.

I know everyone else has said this but try 1.5v on the cpu and like 1.3v-1.4v for the cpu/nb. Don't go above 1.55v on the cpu on air, and push your NB clock to like 2.5ghz or more it should help with stability.
You could also try a combo of a fsb OC with mult to get higher clocks, and make sure your hyper transporter is around 2ghz +or- 100mhz

The h50 rad can not compare to a custom loop or kit.

It's also at stock.
