there are many threads on this....
and posting this in an actual "Camp's" thread is dangerous....
however, the Radeons are better at scaling, but have more driver issues, as well as more X-Fire issues with some recent games.

Here's the short version:

They perform within 5% of each other (depending on the game) at stock, with a slight edge going to the 6950. 560s are monster OCers, 6950s can unlock to 6970s, and both scale exceptionally well in multi card setups, so either way you will get very solid performance for the price.

The extra VRAM on the 6950 will help if you play above HD resolutions and/or like using modded texture packs and/or high levels of AA.

I would have to say come to the red side you won't be disappointed 6950 is faster then a 560ti and Xfire scales near 100%,also heat wise there about the same, both chip makers have there issues with drivers a little bit more so for amd but not by much and plus when you do get an issue you gain even more troubleshooting experience that you can always add to your giant bank of information about computeing

hd6950 & gtx560ti are great cards & I love both of them,
hd6950 2gb is bit more powerful & it can be unlocked to hd6970 so it definitely worth extra $20,
amd 6series gpu scales amazingly,so does nvidia,
go with hd6950 2gb,
i hope my post helped u

I may be a bit biased, but I'd say go with the 6950(s). Like most are saying, they are both excellent cards for their current price points. I was in the same boat as you and the thing that pushed me over to the red side was the 2GB VRAM + the ability to unlock to 6970 specs. Right now you can get a Sapphire reference 6950 for $255 with the $20 MIR, which is an awesome deal. However, I doubt you'd be disappointed with either card. Good luck with your decision

+1 to this being dangerous to post such a general "which is better" in one of the specific sections. With a little bit more detailed information e.g. "Here is my rig, these are the games I play, this is what I want/desire out of a video card" this would be an easy decision and would have very little chance of starting controversy but with such a general "which is better" type question, problems could arise.

With that said the 6950 is stronger in almost all regards, it is slightly better at stock has a very good chance of unlocking to a 6970, scales slightly better in CF, and has more VRAM (VRAM is the most important of those to me). Some possible downsides of the 6950 include it's weak tessellation power, many people prefer Nvidia drivers over AMD (myself included) and comparing reference designed coolers between the two the 6950 is both hotter running at the chip and much louder.

The two most important aspects of the two cards to me when I was making a similar decision over the last few months was the more VRAM of the 6950 which was very important to me but may not be to you, and the much better tessellation for the future of the Nvidia side. These two things led to me step up my budget a little bit and get a 570 to get the best of both worlds.

With a little more information about your current system and what you want out of your card and how you'd like to use it would allow better recommendations.

So an unlocked 6950 can match a stock 6970? Or can it almost match an overclocked 6970? Reason I ask is, when a 560 is clock around 1000MHz on the core, it often beats a stock 6970 except a couple games where ATI flat out has better support. However, I don't think I'd buy a 1GB card for SLI. Too bad only Palit makes a 2GB 560.

Is the tessellation power of nVidia cards really substantially better?

It's not opinion that AMDs can not tessellate on the level that Nvidia can but what is open to interpretation is whether or not that matters. AMD's tessellation engine choke out considerably after a tessellation factor of more than either 16 or 32 (I can't remember exactly, I will try and find evidence and update with the correction. EDIT: it is 16.) but the DirectX11 standard calls for tessellation factors of up to 64 levels. Only being able to cope with half of the called for tessellation levels was not what I was looking for.

EDIT: This is the closest thing to what I was looking for that I could find about the tessellation engine in the 6900 from AMD. Basically the last half of this page shows that all AMD did was take two of the inadequate tessellation engines from the 5800 and put them in the 6900. This is a problem because tessellation performs better the more range you have to work with, so the fact that the AMDs choke past a tessellation factor of 16 when games of the future have the ability to use 64 levels of tessellation (fingers crossed they actually do) was not something I personally wanted to be limited by.

6950 is a better card...buy a reference 6950 and unlock it to 6970 for GTX 570 performance...best bang for the buck out there...
