I'm thinking about upgrading my GTX 260 to a 5850 or 5870. If I get the 5850 I could probably get those crossfired within a year but if I get the 5870 I'd probably wait 2 years. Which one is the better buy for the price and future proofed I'm also considering an equal Nvidia card. Also I have no experience with ATI cards.

Get a 5850 reference and clock it. A 5850 can be clocked almost at the same speeds as a 5870, and gives you more performance for your money.

I'm thinking about getting another 5850 for CF myself, but I've heard alot of driver problems with crossfire ;/

Where are you located? Right now the Nvidia cards are very well priced and have great performance. The 460 or 470 would probably be best for you based off of what you stated in your post.

The GTX470 can be had for under $300 nowadays. The 460 is also an amazing bang for the buck. The 460 1gb cyclone is $205 after rebate.

eh if i were you i would wait. TBH you missed the wagon on these cards (assuming the 6000 series is a huge upgrade). If you absolutely need something now then get 5850. But honestly i would wait and see what the 6000 series has to offer. I went from CF 5770's to one 5770 and it handles my gaming needs fine (comparable to the 260). Ultimately the choice is up to you.

ati cards are supposed to drop in price soon with the release of the 6xxx series. I may grab another 5850 for crossfire, or upgrade to a 6870 depending on price/performance ratio.
