I need reasoning to purchase the 5850 over the 460.

I'm on a budget so anyone of these cards would be great.

I'm mostly into gaming and want to be able to play games like BF3 etc when they drop.

Wait till BF3 then buy your GPU, should be able to pick up a cheap 5870, or GTX470 or even better a 6870/6950 by that time. Patience!

The 5850 is a more powerful card than the 460, but I would try to look for one with a reference design so that it can OC further.

I was also considering waiting also. Do you think the prices will drop significantly? Because there are some games I would like to also play with better performance like GTA4 etc.

That GTX 460 is the crappy one. It has 48 CUDA cores lopped off.

Both of those cards are yuck!

The 5850 is non-reference, bargain PCB with limited overclocking potential.

The 460 is the SE (scam edition).

They're about on par: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_6790/1.html

Check and read that review (as well as others on the internet). BUT, if they do unlock the 6850 is a bit better than the GTX 460.
