My cousin and I are always in competition to have better computers than each other. Right now we're both running 4200s (his being AM2, mine being 939), I have better RAM timings and my raptor 150g hd tears his hd apart. A few months ago he bought a x1900xtx and not wanting to fall behind, I bought one too. Now that I'm taking a look at the 6600, he claimed that he has bought a 6700. What I would like to know is this. If I still buy a 6600 as opposed to his 6700, will I be able to overclock past him because of my better cooling (liquid) and superior knowledge. He tends to lie about his hardware and claims to have some ddr800 already, but even so, the ddr800 I ordered has better timings (4-4-4-12). Should he not have ddr800, I know he won't keep a 1:1 very long in an overclock. Will this render his OC useless after a certain point? What it all comes down to is benchmarks. I have a feeling that he will push his CPU too far too fast without watching stability and just keep a couple of CPUZ screenshots before he crashes. Therefore, I am using benchmarks to measure performance. Will I be able to out-do him?

E6700 is only good if you have TEC or phase cooling. I'd stick with the E6600.

What does TEC stand for? I remember it vaguely in conjunction with liquid cooling. Also, why is it better for TEC and phase change?

It's better for TEC and phase change, because it has a greater multiplier (better overclocking). You can't reach 3.8ghz+ on air, so why pay more for something that won't make a difference. Basically, with air cooling, you can overclock both the E6600 and E6700 to the same level.

I also would stay with the 6600. I have built a few and there isnt a noticeable diff between them and my x6800.

Hmm I can hit 4.1+ ghz on air with my x6800 and top out at:

e6600 3.9ghz
retail not ES e6700 3.9ghz

on air

so I agree that with air cooling go with the e6600 but if you have water or phase go with the e6700 hands down because It has a multi of 10 and frees you from FSB constraints imposed by the e6600...
I have water cooling, but I think I will go for 6600 anyways, it's significantly cheaper.

Sadly, this drained most of my money. I bought some clothes, spent about $700ish on this hardware, I have to buy The War Chiefs, and some other stuff. I don't think I can justify a 6800. The performance is great, but the price is just so up there... I've never had an upwards unlocked multiplier so I guess I am a bit intrigued to see what new dimensions that brings to my OC. Oh, I also bought an x1900xtx in August and I bought an AMD build earlier this year. I've spent at keast $300 on my computer this year between hardware, cooling, monitors, and peripherals, so I need to take it down a notch.

A E6600 hits 4GHz on water.
