Why SLI 6800GS's when you can use that money and get a 7800GTX(maybe that's a bit more but still)?

EDIT:I'm late.

Yes, but then you can always update a GTX to SLI. But getting two 6800GS means in the future you are gonna have to do a complete upgrade.

But hey man, its up to you!

7800GTX is a better choice. Whatever the 7800GTX overclocks to it will be able to be at the level the 6800GS's will be at.. And no, 2 6800GS's overclocked unless they are crazily overclocked wont rival a 7800GTX 512.

Really? They both have the same amount of pixel pipelines, but the SLI GS setup has 2 more vertexes, and they both have the same amount of memory (2x256=512).

Err.. I would expect you to at least not look at the specs and think that. 2 6800GT's barely keep up with a 7800GTX at stock vs stock. When both overclocked the 7800GTX will be at its level only with alot less hassle.

i just read an article earlier that said 2 6800gs in SLI overclocked to around 520/1.14 can rival a 7800gtx 512 at stock. the review in this thread said that 6800gs in sli NOT overclocked did 19k in 3d03 the best i got with my overclocked 7800gt was 17k so i think its entirely true

I have found canned benchmarks do not show the reality of gameplay and many drivers are now optimized for the canned benchmarks.

The only way to be certain is to try both and make a decision. You might find that F.E.A.R. in 1600 X 1200 works better in 6800GS SLi than 7800GTX 512 and you might find the opposite regardless of the benchmarks.

more benchmarks look through the pages. SLI 6800gs's have better FPS then the x1800xt and the 7800gtx in most tests and isnt that far off in others and these cards cost what 450-550 and 6800gs is like 370 for both. Im saying it performs better and is MUCH cheaper so it is a great idea since im waiting for the new GPU's to come out and want great performance right now till then

I think you're just looking for a good time with SLi on the cheap! So, why not!? I know you will get great performance out of the two. My 6600GT's in SLi do as well as one stock 7800GT. I ain't complainin'

I have 2 eVga 6800GS cards in SLI. OC'd to a modest 490/1100 (81.98 drivers) I get the following scores:

Aquamarkv3: 81,959 (15,141gfx, Max fps didn't change too much, but min fps doubled!)

3DMark01SE: 23728
3DMark03: 21323
3DMark05: 9605
3DMark06: 4862

Haven't used a single 7800 anything so can't really compare. Typically play @ 1280x1024x100Hz and haven't had problems with max settings on the games I've tried. WoW, BF2, BFME2, CIV4, FEAR, WC3

YMMV

No way 2x 6800GS are $270, lowest price for one I've seen is $170 for an eVGA at NewEgg.

but think about this... 6800GS' in SLi = 7800GTX performance, right? Dual 6800GSs will run you about $340. The minimum price for a 7800GTX256 I've seen is about $440. The 6800GSs are definently the better choice, economicly speaking.

Newegg has the eVga ones for $154 after MIR (for today at least).

Anyone know what the 7800GT(X) roughly gets for min FPS in Aquamark?
