6950 - Best Non-Water Aftermarket Cooling Solution?

1010 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BlahBlahBlah
Greets folks..

Recently upgraded to 6950 CF and I am not sure that I can deal with the hair dryer cooling solution. I have had non reference cooling designs for years now and have always been satisfied (Twin Frozr II, DirectCu II, etc) so I am looking at that option.

Water cooling just isn't in the cards for me, not something that interests me because I move the case far too much and water is..water.

Anyways, I am looking for opinions on getting some aftermarket coolers on these things.

Arctic Accelero Xtreme Plus looked like something that was up my alley..similar to designs I have had in the past.

I will be running the cards in Slots 1 & Slots 3, giving them plenty of room to breathe (and dump hot air into the case for all I care).

So my questions would be:

1) What is the best noise/performance solution for aftermarket cooling on these? As long as it doesn't sound like a hair dryer it is fine for me.

2) Do I need an aftermarket VRM heatsink kit with your recommendation?

3) Do I need anything else to successfully install it and have it be safe?

Thanks as always for any help!

The Accelero Xtreme is probably your best option for air cooling. [Be sure to get the VR001 addon for proper cooling]

As for waterblocks, I honestly have no clue :\

As for your questions
1. See above
2. Yes, the VR001 is the VRM Kit actually ^^
3. A good screw driver kit with proper sized heads, a good hour or so of time, and plenty of patience

do NOT laugh
Three speeds, two outlets and a long cord. This thing rocks.

As to the hairdryer... the vapor block coolers are awesome on my 6970s, I can throw the hammer over and hold them at about 53° under full load. It IS noisy but very effective.
I can't see any other cooling solution short of water producing the same effect.
A simple mod using soundproofing foam and poster board to create a "muffling" pocket with about 3/4 of an inch gap at either end might be a good sound solution.

Also, have you considered a closed circuit kit like the H50 / H70

Does the VR001 kit include the heatsinks AND the backplate? I keep reading online in angry reviews that people are trying to get all the parts but miss out on one thing or another.

Is the AXP+VR001 absolutely everything you need to attach it to a reference 6950?

Edit:
From Newegg:

Cons: The cooler is expensive. Need to buy an extra ram kit which cost about $15 plus the thermal adhesive (not just any thermal) which permanently glued the ram sink to the board that add another $10.

Does the VR001 include the thermal adhesive this guy is talking about as well?
