Hello folks
smile.gif

I am trying to overclock my shader unlocked 6950 CF using MSI Afterburner. When I set the overclock to anything above the CCC locked slider setting (840), I get a problem where even on fresh reboots GPU2 goes up to 100% usage and stays there until I run a 3d app, then it comes back down.

I read on Hardware Canucks that 10.12a drivers made this issue go away, but I am more for using current drivers (10.4).

Is this really the only solution?

I actually just switched to red, 460 -> 6950x2 shader unlock so I have only used 11.4, period.

I am having no end of trouble overclocking these things.

Can't find a proper guide for the best way to do it. CCC is locked at 840..Afterburner will go over 840 but that doesn't play well with CCC. Have this GPU2 idle usage problem..

Just a mess honestly..is trying different drivers the best way to go?

Did you verify that GPU2 is actually at 100% in an application other that afterburner?

IMO afterburner is really humping the dog on the 6950 especially in crossfire. Did you disable ULPS in the system registry?

I did disable ULPS..can't remember what that was supposed to do though..I've been running through every trick in every post I can find :/

Haven't looked in anything other than Afterburner..

Honestly, I'm just trying to get a decent OC on and I can't seem to find the right combo to do it.

CCC slider is still locked at 840, and it is disappearing if I touch the AB sliders..

Well disabling the ulps will keep the CCC from powering down the second GPU. If you don't do it, You will get a hard lockup anytime you try to apply a speed setting in AB.

AB is buggy with these cards. The disappearing sliders in CCC are normal and no cause for alarm. If you enable unofficial overclocking in AB and then apply a setting higher than the max stock setting, 840, the slider will disappear.

Don't forget to adjust powertune to +20 also or you will see the driver throttle down the clock dynamically under load.

Are there any reasonable alternatives to AB? I love it because it has all the features in one place (OSD, monitoring, and your OCs + profiles).

I guess I could potentially try the registry hack for CCC and do my overclocks through there over 840? Anyone have details on how to do that and how effective it is?

If you find one, let me know. I can't say I've tried any better ones but.....

The only real problem with using CCC is no fan profile support and with OC'd 6950 you need a more aggressive fan profile. I'll have both mine under water within the month so not a problem much longer.....
