750Gb Seagate DOA?

526 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  LiNERROR
Long story short, I got this drive for $79 with free shipping. Now I normally buy Western Digital, but I figured "Hey, it's a good deal."

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148298

Now reading the reviews, I realize that I should not have bought this, and the reason it was probably on sale is because it is such a bad drive.

Here is what is strange tho. I have tried this in 3 computer, 2 with Windows XP and 1 with Vista Ultimate. None of them see the drive. But in the bios, it shows up, with the s/n or whatever and it saying it is a 750GB drive. Any idea as to why it is being seen in the bios but not in the os?

Did you go into disk manager and format the drive?

Right click on "my computer" and select "manage"

+1. You have to initialize the drive first, then windows will see it. Then you can partition it/format it or whatever you wanna do. It should show up in disk manager. If it doesnt, you may have a problem.

How would I initialize the drive? And the operating system does not see the drive, how could I format it.
I went through the sam thing with 1 of 2, 250G 7200 10 (purple the best of the two made) drives.
1 was fine, the other would freeze up any PC I put it in when I tried to access it, not even Segates utility worked, it froze the PC with that too! Couldn't boot if it was Primary or storage or even in an external USB... as the external or hot swapped it was simply borked!

And yes, it was formated in XP first, that was the only thing it did do.

I too usually buy WDs and this was actually my first Segate purchase, and last.

Hope you work it out.

As Mortimersnerd said, Right click on "my computer" and select "manage" and it will show you a list of your drives under "disk management"

The OS wont see the drive until you initialize it.

When I first bought my 320GB I had to do the same thing. I thought it wasn't working then I googled and found out I had to initialize it in disk managemnet.

You have to format the drive. It doesn't just show up.

Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management > Format

Well, WD Retail drives come with that data lifeguard stuff on the drive so sometimes they are already pre-formatted for windows. Seagate comes with nothing on it. That might be the difference.

OEM drives normally do not have a partition on them, much less one formatted to NTFS. Expect to initialize/partition/format bare drives.
