Hmmm...I would also say 7600gs..not sure though. I believe 7600 has sm3.0 though

The GT-versions are generally always the best all-round in the series.
As you can see here, even compared to the GS-versions of later series.
I'd go with the 6800GT and perhaps boost the core a little, if possible.

a 6800gt easily oc'ed to ultra speeds will do pretty well. I cant see it being too far behind a 9500gt.
6800gt is a little better than a 7600gt which is alittle worse than a 8600gt=9500gt
so it should have similar to 9500gt performance.

Your right, but you really can't compare 2 or 3 different types of GPU architecture. Benches are one thing, but how the architecture/GPU processes a game will be very different from series to series. at least in real world gaming.
+1 on your comparisons though, they are spot on.

EDIT: example; I thought I was upgrading a year ago to a better card when I got a 8500Gt to replace my 7600GT. Even thought the 7600GT had DDR3 and the 8500GT had DDR2 the 8500GT still performed slightly better sometimes almost the same as the 7600GT in games like Crysis.
