guys!

This is my dilemma?
BF2 Game
I am currently running a BFG6800GT 256MB O/C with ForceWare Release 80-Version: 81.98- Release Date: February 7, 2006-WHQL Certified. Currently getting between 90-100FPS on Ultra settings as per O/C.net FAQ on stock settings.

I am in the process of getting my old Gate*** up and running so my kids can play with me.
I cant seem to decide weather to get a 6600GT for the Gate*** or go all out and upgrade my system.

Now i am currently eying the XFX Geforce 7800GS 256MB 256-bit
The question is:

Do you think its worth the money to upgrade my card from a 6800GT to the 7800 series card? ((I mean it's $300.00))

Is there more advantages to the 7800GS card?
Will i see the 100FPS with BF2?

You guys need to give me some benefits to having the 7800 series card other than bragging rights!

You no that old saying. If it ain't broke, don't fix it
That always seems to bite me in the a**!

Firstly you will not even notice the difference from 80 to 100 frames because the human eye cannot notice that many frames per second...So technically NO you will not be able to notice it...Now as for bragging right yeah you would prolly get to 100 FPS...However since the coming of DX10 I would wait to upgrade your card until then...The 6800GT will run you just fine until then and even when it is released it will run good. but I would not upgrade until DX10.

Get the little buggers either the 6600GT or go for a 6800. Here are 2. One comes with COD2 the other does not. I have this card but with a different cooler. Mine was an all copper one this one is the 6800 Ultra cooler. Cant beat that. You might get some dang good OCs wth it. Mine is at 415/845 running in the wife's Dell. Man $21.00 for COD2 if you dont have it is a great deal. Retails for $50.00 at the local game shop. I assume the Gate*** has an AGP slot?

$175.00 w/COD2

$154.00 in case you own COD2 already.

What I suggested is for the Gateway not his computer. READ the orginal post again. He wants to get a 6600GT for the kid's or upgrade his to the 7800GS and I guess put the 6800GT in the Gateway. I suggested a new card for the Gateway and leave the 6800GT in his. This way he upgrades to DX10 and PCIe with his and does not feel like he wasted money on the 7800GS. So my orginal post stands and it is NOT a downgrade but and UPGRADE over the 6600GT and whatever is in the Gateway now. Apology accepted.

No, dont get rid of a 6800GT for a 7800GS it isnt worth it from everything I heard. I mean, it would be if it wasnt so expensive!

I just bought the eVGA 7800GS to upgrade from my ATI 9800PRO. I have had nothing but random reboot problems, mostly in games and 3dmark, once just sitting in windows with firefox open.
I applied AS5 to the heatsink a minute ago, we will see what that will do. The "detect optimal frequencies" gave me 462/1360 My temps are 40C idle and >60C load using ATItool artifact detection. I know it is a good card, maye it is my power supply. I've tried many setups with my 2 PSU's. All the results are the same. I will get it running eventually (hopefully).

Man i am sure glad i didn't pump out the doe for this card. I have read allot forums were people like you have had reboot issues.
((suggestion)) Try running a single harness to that card. Make sure there is nothing else plugged into that harness, but the card.

Went ahead and bought the 6600GT for my wifes Gate*** and a new power supply as well. Not a bad price for a 35amp rail i say.

It's funny, i payed $100.00 for P/S a year ago and its only a 28amp rail.

The kid will learn to love the game ((BF2)) with low graphics.

Thanks to you all for the replies and suggestions.
PS good luck with that card.

This is a great thread, I'm looking at upgrading myself and was thinking about the 7800gs. I'm now checking out the 6600gt or the 6800. Thanks to everyone for all the great advice

I might have my 7800GS stable right now, last night I picked up the 84.21 drivers and put AS5 on to replace the stock thermal compound. The only game I have that is really unstable is C&C Generals. I haven't tried much else, I have been attempting to fix these games I let one of my friends friends borrow. BIG MISTAKE, the CD's came back looking like he had thrown them into a wood chipper, I don't know how some of these scratches could even get there. So now I don't have Far Cry or Half Life 2.
I am going to test the card some more, I will report my findings.
