7900GS Fan Question

437 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Cyberbot
I know I have an older card and am in need of an upgrade. that will come after the holidays. Anyways, my question is does anyone have an issue with their nvidia card not scaling the cooling fan correctly based on temp? I have been trying to figure this out for a few months now and have just resorted to using the evga program to manually control my fan speed. if I leave it on auto or do not use a program to control my gpu cooling fan then it will run up 70*C @ 40% fan speed in game. and if I run the fan at 75% in game(been playing Dragon's Age Origins) I get @ 57*C. and yes I have this card OC'd to 550/700MHz(450/650MHz stock) respectively with no shader clock adjustment.

As long as it stays under 70C, your fine.

The reason that the fan is not ramping up to a higher RPM is simple....the card is not getting hot enough to warrant an increase. If the GPU was getting to say 85C or higher, the fan would spin up to near 100%. GPUs can handle intense heat just fine, and most of the "auto" settings don't go full bore until 85C or higher. Your temps are just fine, nothing to worry about.

It can handle much, much more than that.

The cards not getting hot enough, GPUs are good up to 100+C.
They usually won't kick the fans up until you reach 80C or so.

My 9500GT stays @ 100% on AUTO, but it's quiet so I don't mind lol.

Yup, it can. But tell me this: would you be comfortable letting your $250 card sit in 100C 24/7?

I sure would not.

My old 260 C216 sat at 98C IDLE @ stock clocks. I returned that sucker to Fry's or Microcenter quickly

Not 24/7, no...but my 4850 hit 117C for at least an hour and was fine.

I too try to keep my GPUs under 70C, and I totally see your point. But you really have nothing to worry about until you are in the 100C range. I folded 24/7 on a hot 8800GS at about 80-85C for months on end....no issues. Still cranks through games no sweat.

my htpc/second folding rig has a PNY 8500GT 512Mb card in it, unfortunately the 7900gs eats it for lunch.
I had a passive cooled 7600GS before I got my GTX 285. I had for 3 years and the temps during gaming were 62-68C (sometimes 70C). It still runs good after 3 years, so don't worry, your card will be just fine
