7900GTX: Stock cooler or VF900?

242 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  leimrod
Ok I just recieved my 2x7900GTX's that I bought off USforces (thanks man
) but the stock heatsinks are MAHOOSIVE!!!1

I've got a VF900 on my present 7900GT and a few spare ramsinks lying about, should I move it over to one of the 7900GTXs? Or is the stock cooler good enough? The only thing i'm thinking about is that the VF900 might lower my GPU temps but as it has no exhaust feature my actual sys temps might go up?

Any ideas?

Don't think the VF900 will fit on the GTX to be honest

It's the same PCB as the 7900GT... just more RAM. It will fit.

I say just stick with stock. those coolers are excellent as-is.

Namrac is right, the GTX's cooler probably does a better job at cooling the ramdacs than a VF900 heatsinks would.
I vote for the stock cooler

The accelero would be good though

Ok I just found and read this review over at VR-Zone. It proves exactly what I imagined. The VF900 is considerably better at cooling the GTX, but it doesn't deal with other system temperatures. Any ideas as to whether or not the exhaust would really make that much difference to the likes of my NB and CPU temps?
I would say stick with the stock cooler

Has anybody ever tried to change the fan on the stock cooler ?

Don't know about on here, but on a few other places i'm currently reading others have. i'm probably going to sell one of the 7900GTXs on and overclock the other one. So I want to get the best possible heat dissipation possible, but if it means my NB overheats or I can't get overclock my CPU more then i won't bother.

Maybe I can be the guinea pig and test both, and record changes in sys temps as well
Although i'd prefer not to
