I am still waiting for my 290 to come in and I have a 7970 EK CSQ backplate lying around. Any idea if it will fit?

No. That card has a completely different PCB and different screw holes.

Question though. Does the backplate really need to be tight to the PCB or as long as the thermal pads make contact with the VRM?

Here are some pics of how it looks. The bottom right screw hole lines up fine, but the other three dont. The top right screw hole makes contact with a square electronic so it looks raised, but can be trimmed.
