OK so I upgraded my 670 to a GTX 690 a few weeks ago to get some better speeds in Criyis 3 and the likes. I then purchased a 2560 x 1440 monitor and am trying to install a set of 7970's for crossfire since I want the higher memory amounts for when I add the other 2 matching monitors for eyefinity.. The 7970 wont show any display except a black screen and a white mouse arrow pointer but GTX 690 will boot and display no problem.

Now I have gone through and uninstalled the NVidia drivers from the Windows control panel. I am running windows 8 so I cant boot to safe mode to run a driver sweeper but I have run CCleaner to clear out any extra "pieces" of NVidia that are hanging around.

I know for a fact these cards work since I used them both before. I also was trying these one at a time in different pci-e slots as well.

What the hell do I do to fix this???? Thank you to anyone who can help.

Plug both the 690 and 7970 in to the mobo and startup. Then when youve logged into windows try plugging in the monitor on the 7970, does it output anything? Beware you need a good PSU to do this

It might be a driver problem, you can try DriverSweeper to uninstall any nvidia drivers.

Never thought about the both card thing. Ill try that in a few moments.

I would like to use driver sweeper but as I said I have windows 8 and it doesnt seem to work with that at all.

**Update**

I installed one of the 7970 cards with the gtx 690 as the main card and the radeon as the second. The computer booted as it has on the nvidia then I was able to install the radeon drivers for the 7970. Switched the cable to the 7970 and bam worked great. I thought all was well so I uninstalled the gtx 690 and installed the second 7970 and now back to the exact same issue of black screen after the Windows 8 logo and tries to load the desktop.

Where/how did you procure the 7970? Black screen on log in is typical of a bios hash mismatch, ie. the bios does not match the driver hash so the driver will not load, aka black screen. You didn;t flash it did you?

Nope sure didnt.

I decided to do a clean install of windows and all problems are gone.

Well this clean install worked so now I can use the cards. However the performance is horrid! I actually formatted windows 8 twice and am getting a terrible bit of screen distortion which almost looks like the top and bottom half of the games are not at the same speeds. This is mainly in WoW but is also in Mass Effect 3, Crysis 3, and even the stock unigen heaven 3.0 max frames were only 90.1 which the 7950 I had before would exceed that easily.

I have 2 xfx 7970 BE cards and this is an issue with both.

ANY ideas?

Is it possible this is a motherboard issue?
