I am looking for component recommendations, particularly case, GPU, and power supply.

Hello all,

I am looking to make a pretty quiet (silent not necessary) build. What I would like is something that will play some games (Total War series is a particular favorite) and probably act as a decent DVR (1080p) if I want it to.

From research I figured this might be a starting point for specs:
- core i5 (not sure if I need a 2500k or something less)
- 4 gig DDR3 1600
- quiet power supply (but probably not too big)
- 1T 7200 drive (I could always add more later)
- optical drive
- quiet'ish (or silent) gaming card

I do not need the most screaming graphic card out there, but something that should be able to handle games for 3-4 years, even if you have to step down the graphics a bit.

I also am not a major overclocker, but I came here because you all seem to really know your hardware, and I don't. I much prefer stability and don't want to have to worry about airflow if I am overclocking. If I can get both accomplished that would be nice, but not a priority.

Can this be accomplished?

for a quiet graphics card you could go for the silent edition of the 5750, then if it becomes less capable on newer games go crossfire to produce 6950 comparable performance.

My recommendation for psu is definitely seasonix x-750, which is on sale right now.

If you want to even consider overclocking...

CPU cooler $20-50
No specific recommendations, depends on budget, what's available and what's on sale. My preference for SILENCE is a Scythe Ninja 3 (SCNJ-3000). With a Core i5 2500K you can run it passively, even with a bit of overclock. Another popular choice is the Cooler Master Hyper 212+. It is popular because it is cheap and works well, It is not, however, very quiet, plus it won't work in passive mode. Still, not too bad if you enable a quiet fan profile in BIOS.

Cheaper Asus ATX board (P8P67 LE) isn't as good for overclocking. Other brands may be fine too.

You don't need expensive RAM with Sandy Bridge, not even for overclocking. Your money is better off spent on a graphics card.

The dual fan cards should be reasonably quiet and stay very cool.

It isn't the best "gaming" case out there, but it is hands down one of the best "silent" cases out there, especially for quieting hard drives. Another option would be a Fractal Design Define R3.

PSU market is super competitive so deals can change daily and sometimes there are smoking hot rebates, so don't get too attached to one unit. This one is decent, made by Seasonic for Antec. It has more than enough power for such a rig, plus is very compact and reasonably quiet. Sure, the Seasonic X series is pretty awesome, but it also takes up too much of the budget.

Almost as fast as the WD Black (fastest 7200RPM HDD on market) but quieter and cheaper. Look for deals, because it is often on sale here and there for $5-10 less.

Okay, this is a bit above your budget at $880. Can your budget stretch that far?

If you want silent, buy some Noctua fans. They will definitely help to keep everything quiet.

u can reduce the budget by getting a hd6870

Its very tough for me to include a decent cpu cooler in this budget

I would recommend going for the gtx 560 ti dual fan rather than the 6950, cheaper and quieter.

gtx560ti is a great card too,
I like both amd & nvidia,
msi gtx560ti hawk is the best gtx560ti out in the market,
asus gtx560ti direct cuII & gigabyte gtx560ti super OC is great too
