8800GT cooling

I need a cooler for my 8800GT. It is running 81C idle and 98C load not overclocked.

Is the Accelero S1 Rev.2 good? I can get it for $20, which is my maximum budget.

Is this a good choice? I want to get load temperatures around 70C.

BTW, I'm in Canada.

You should probably consider the air flow in your case first. Does your case have any fans? Does the air move well? You should have intake and exhaust fans.
Welcome to OCN. (Remember to fill in your specs in USER CP)
And on topic: woah are those really your temps. I mean there are very high.
And for that cooler...its ok but if you could extend your budget then i'd recomment the Thermaltake DUORB which is for $37 on newegg.
I have a XPS 420. There is an input fan for sure. There should be an exhaust fan.

I was going to ask if stock cooling is this bad. I can't believe I'm running like this for almost 2 years. Is that bad for the card? I run [email protected] GPU pretty often.

Buy the Accelero, I have it and its great, you can use it without a fan (passive) or slap a fan on it and it cools even more.

98C is load @ 100% fan.

Any other suggestions?

Is $20 a good price for a unused Accelero S1 Rev.2?

Will any fan work or only the optional fan for the Accelero?

When I had the 8800gt, I used the acellero s1 and strapped a 120mm fan to it. The most difficult thing that I have heard is getting the ramsinks to stick. I never used them since I opted to buy some iandh ramsinks instead.
from what i've heard you can slap a good 120mm fan ona nd get better temps, just might require some modding
Happened to me on my 921.

The front fan was blowing the hot air coming outside the GPU into it again.

Solution? I went watercooling. But the Accelero S1 is awesome.
You said that you have had this gpu for two years now? Have you done a thorough cleaning of the card? Unscrew the cover and blow out the heatsink and fins.

I'll probably need to do that, but it is a pain. I'll do it during my Christmas break. I'll buy a Accelero anyways.

Have you tried cleaning out the stock cooler first?

It might be clogged full of dust

Dude it's really not worth spending anything on such an old card...

Just give the stock cooler a clean and apply some fresh thermal grease and you'll notice a massive differnece

Where can I get thermal paste?

Is there any guide to opening the 8800GT to clean and apply thermal paste?
You can get thermal paste from most electronics stores that have computer parts. By the time you clean it off, get thermal paste applied, a new cooler and all that stuff you could have just put ~35$ towards a new card.

Just clean your current card off to make sure there isn't much dust on it and leave it how it is. I have the same card, but my case has great airflow. If your card is that hot, it's probably not the coolers fault; it is from lack of airflow. This lack is from either dust on the card or poor airflow from the case.

If it's bad airflow in the case it doesn't matter what card you have it's gonna get hot.
First you must Try Re timing the card... , coz you have been using it 4 abt 2 Years, if there isn't any Diff you can go with the Cooler

You can get Arctic Silver 5, Shin Etsu, OCZ Freeze, etc at lots of online retailers. (I'm not sure where in the world you live)

If it's a reference 8800GT there are little screws holding on the metal cover. Just remove them. If the card is clogged full of dust, I would just blow it out and try it again -- you might not need to re-apply thermal paste.
