8800gtx w/VF900 = same temps

Took off the stock cooler/heatsink, and mounted a Zalman VF900, and recieved the exact same temps loading and idle, the thing about these 8800gtx deals, is they come equiped with the Heat Spreader, over the chip, making direct cooling impossible, it's like no matter what you add you still are going through a layer of useless metal rendering said (air) cooling methods useless.

this is NOT my picture, just an example of the heat spreader covering up the chip.

So basically the heat spreader is held on with epoxy, so dont try and take it off because you will rip off some very important crap. And dont bother trying to rig up air cooling lol because if a vf900 can't get a single degree drop then what can?

btw GPU was sitting at 52 degrees in idle, with stock and vf900.

Im not to Surprised. The Stock cooler from just looks looked pretty efficient as it is..Also has the advantage of Exhausting warm air out of the case...Zalman doesnt
I've heard that the stock coolers for the G80's are already VERY good coolers.

hahaha, yeah I just did this to quench my curiousity, I know there were plenty of people considering doing this also, so this was for them.
As for the stock fan having the exaust out the back, yes it does, but it doesnt work worth a damn, so if you guys havnt done so already, add either an IDE slot fan, or just a small case fan below to blow all the heat out, originally it dropped my temps from 58 to 52, so it's very well worth it, also keeps the air from rising to the CPU.

Yup, the PCI slot blower fan was discussed in the g80 owners club thread. Pinhead gave links to a couple good ones and also his temp differences.
If I had an 8800 id only replace the stock cooler for water or phase. Any other air cooler is going to struggle doing a better job than the stock HSF.
From what I heard, the stock coolers were designed by Zalman. If you are using the VF900, make sure to apply additional HS. I believe you need 17 total as seen here:

What kind of temp drops do you see with the PCI fan bracket ?

I just use that 90mm fan exausting out the back, and it went from 58-59 to 51-52 in idle. Nothing special just a damn exaust fan, also my CPU temp shot up when I put this card in from 32 to 41, because of all the rising heat going up to my CPU, which went right back down to 32 when I added the exaust.
