I was playing BFBC2 for about an hour and half or so and noticed I wasn't hearing the fan going crazy on my 5870 like it always does so I became curious. I minimized and checked on afterburner and to my dismay, realized that my fan profile decided to not load up and my temps reached a maximum of 92 degrees celcius.

I was told not too long ago what this card was rated up to in terms of temperature according to the manufacturer but I can't seem to remember. Can anyone else share their thoughts on my unsettling experience?

I wouldnt worry if that was the first time. My 6970 reaches high 80s daily.

I hope you're right, I noticed before anything happened but when I seen that, I shat a bit. The most I ever let my card get to is around 68c, I try to be extremely careful with those types of things but for some reason or another, afterburner failed me.

I USUALLY do and I think I even did but for some reason I overlooked the fact that auto fan control disabled itself, which I have no idea how considering the importance of that option being enabled. Also, my brother kept reminding me yesterday to update afterburner but I forgot like a damn fool.

They have little relation. Same PCB but different cooling. VRM's are made to run at 110'c safely anyway.

Op shouldn't have got the Asus 5870 V2. The coolers rubbish, even the reviews said so. Which is why you don't get non-Ref cards.

92c is too hot a 5870. Something isnt right. Are you overclocking it? When i say its too hot for a 5870, i dont mean its too hot to run, I believe the 5870s are ok up to 95c or 100c, but you are getting really close. Also, i looked at a few reviews of the asus 5870 vs and it seems to cool better than a reference 5870, something is not right for sure. Check afterburner and see what it says and what your fan speed is at. With my 5870 at 45% fan speed, my temps never get over 64c during stress test.

i noticed you are running a 9800gt for physx, maybe its heating up your case and your card a lot.

Clean up the card. I bet its full of dust around the fan area stooping the airflow.

The only reason my card got so hot is because my afterburner profile did not kick in and without that, my fan runs at 20%. That combined with the fact that it was under full load for about an hour and a half is why it was hot. The problem wasn't the why, I just wanted to make sure nothing would have been damaged by such hot temps.

Mostly my fault for not checking to make sure my fan profile was all set before playing BFBC2.

Some people don't have a choice when they are forced to RMA because their card dies. Like myself. Either way, 92C, your card will be fine. Iv had cards get above 100 before. And since it was only an hour I wouldn't worry about it.

my apologies OP. I dont think you damaged anything. I think you are fine. Afterburner sometimes locks my fan speed also when windows boots up. It goes up to 100% and i have to go in the program and unlock it.

You don't have to accept a different card from RMA. Unless if its written in your returns policy and that would make you silly for accepting it. Go with a different site/vendor. Even a cash or store credit refund would have been better.

I'm always very sure to get back the same model of card to what I sent in or get a refund.

And I am supposed to return and get a refund for a card that is 13 months old? No I don't think that would happen. Also it was either the non ref card or nothing because that was all they had.
