Despite my 720BE working great I couldn't resist buying a 955 C3 today to see how well I could OC it. So far I'm at 3.82ghz @ 1.45v. However, according to AMD's site the 955 C3 has a max temp of only 62c. My problem is after 50 LinX runs I'm already hitting 57c and after two hours of Prime95 blend tests I'm at 54c. Ambient room temp is 20c. Do these temps seem unusually high given my setup? With my 720BE temps were never a problem but with this 955 I'm having issues despite the fact I'm using a S1283 with a 120mm 93CFM fan and IC7 TIM. Is the 955 C3 just a hot CPU in general?

No that seems about right, I have a C2 chip and when I run it at 3.8 @ 1.43v I see somewhat similar temps which is why I brought the chip back down to 3.7 @ 1.40v and the highest it goes is 51C while folding - 44C while gaming.

For me that extra bit wasn't worth the heat.

quad core will be alil higher then triple core.
and 955 is 125W, 720 is 95W.
so 955 usually runs hotter then 720 with using the same cooler.

How could the 955BE max temp be 62c while the 555BE max temp is at 70c? I thought quad core could handle more heat?

That's the thing, the 62c max temp listed on AMD's site seems a bit conservative?

Anyhow, I guess I'll settle with 3.82ghz. Despite my high temps on Linx/Prime95 I never go above 50c while encoding videos and gaming so I should be good. Also, I use PhenomMSRTweaker to downclock it to 2.1ghz @ 1.25v when I don't need the extra power.

+rep to everyone who helped

Get an h50. I run mine in exhaust.

My room temps are slightly higher than 20c.

I get:
Idle @ 30c
Max @ 44c

Sometimes when my room temps are colder, I get idle at 25-26c and max @ 35c (it's great when the room is cold).

My clock is 3.8GHz @ 1.45v and a 2400MHz CPU/NB (1.215v).

Just a suggestion.

if your temps are so low why not take it to 4.0?

Because he will need like 1.57-1.60V and "end of story" for H50.
