I want to get a 9600gt for my dell inspiron 531 which only has a 300psu. I have a amd 4400 dual core 2.3 2gigs ram so would the card run on my 300 psu? Also where does the 6pin pcie connector go from where to where? does it connect from video card to psu or from video card to motherboard

I VERY highly doubt it would work for too long.

I'd suggest you look into a ATI HD4670 instead. About the same performance, and doesn't require a 6pin connector, which means your stock 300w Dell PSU will handle it fine.

Positive it won't work. It'll work, but that PSU will fry itself VERY quickly. Your PSU has 11.6a on the 12v rail. The 9600GT requires 22a minimum.

You have 140w available to 12v (160w available to the 3.3 and 5). So 140w divided by 12v, equals 11.66a on the 12v rail. That is NOT enough to power a 9600GT.

However, again...the ATI HD4670 will run with ease on your system, and its as powerful as a 9600GT.

I not sure about that. As far as I can understand, Dell buys the cheapest minimum requirements for their pre-built systems. Taxing the PSU any more is just not recommended.
Worth a shot though. You can always get the power supply afterwards

IT WILL WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friend has been running a 8800gt OC on one since launch day (almost 1.5 years now)
with a x2 5000+ 2 hdds 2 pci cards to dvd burners, just fine. and the 8800gt uses more electricity (and its a OC model too)
so i guarantee it will work. It was a 305w e521

Wow seriously? So much for considering a new Corsair...

Yea, I hear that some Dell psu's have a non-standard size. My friend's Vostro luckily had the typical ATX12V

yeah, i own a 9600gt and it ran on a 430w thermaltake psu, but that seemed like damn near the minimum of the bar. Go ati, or there are new 9600gt's that are made w/o a 6 pin adapter, so they use low power. try and get one of those, if they are available yet.

That's funny because my sig rig just killed an Apevia PSU that was MUCH more powerful than the 300w Dell that the OP linked. I had 23a on the 12v rail on my Apevia.....and it just died from being overloaded.

same happened to me (430w apevia psu with 8800gt, killed the psu, its the psu that came with my x-gear case)
But it will work with the Dell.

well idk if the psu was killed, it wouldnt boot up, if i took the gpu out and put the psu in it might still boot up (worked with my 8600gts just fine)
(u also have a oc'ed cpu...his cpu is stock)

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Hope it didn't take anything down with it.

Sooo, what's the final word on making the stock PSU work? I'd say upgrade just for under/over voltage protection, PFC, and 80% certification.

I would seriously recommend something better. That's the same PSU that just smoked on me (literally). Pretty much anything Antec, Corsair, PCP&C, etc. should do just fine. I believe the Antec Earthwatts 430w is around $50 or so and is a great PSU for the money.
