9800 GX2 problem

472 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jbobb
My friend that I play online with has a 9800 GX2 card and is having driver problems. He keeps getting an error that the driver has stopped responding. Kinda ticks me off, especially when playing L4D, because he always has to fix it while in the middle of a game. He says it happens in other games as well.

He has tried multiple drivers also. Not positive if he used any type of cleaning software to remove old drivers first when installing new ones. So, I will make sure to recommend he do that if he has not. He has put in EVGA Precision and cranked up the fan speed to make sure it was not overheating also.

Just wondering if anyone out there can let me know what drivers might work the best for him or any other possible fixes that I can give him.

Possible the card may be bad also I guess...he got it off evga b-stock.

Thanks for the input.

DL ati tool and stress test it to make sure the card itself isnt bad. If that is fine Try reinstalling some older drivers that he used before when (if) it worked. Is it in the 90 day zone of warranty? If so just rma it. I remember I had this problem after installing a new driver and my card seemed to stop working from it.. twas lame.
Is the card stock? Like did he add an after market cooler to it? Stock settings?

Does it do anything like the picture in the Original Post in this link?

If so that is artifacting and he needs to RMA it.

He has had it for more than 90 days. I think b-stock is only 30 day warranty though.

Well try older drivers and stress test it. If it still doesnt work maybe reflashing the bios would be your last option and then the buuuuying a new card :/. Perhaps a 4850/70/gtx260 depending on his budget. Good luck

Everything is stock on the card, no OC or anything. As far as I know he doesnt get artifacting on the desktop like the pics. I sent him an email to ask if he has run ATI tool at all. As far as I know, it pops up the little window in the systray saying that the video driver has stopped responding and has recoverd (or something similar). I used to have that happen to me also, but has been fixed with newer drivers. I know he has not tried all drivers out there, but he has tried the newest ones and a few previous ones.

Hmmm try reinstalling windows. That should fix it if reinstalling the drivers doesnt help and the card isnt dead.

Instead of doing that can he test the card in a different computer like another he has or even in your machine?

May be possible. I think he may have another PC. I am going to have him try everything I can think of before a format though.

Generally when Vista displays the 'driver has crashed' message, it means the card overheated, or started artifacting.
Try to get a RMA or improve airflow in the case would be my recommendation.

He set the fan speed to 100% and monitored temps while playing. It didn't appear to overheat anyways. I kow this card does have a history of overheating from what I have seen.

He said he is going to try to run the ATI Tool artifact test to see what happens. I also found out he did not clean the old drivers completely off before installing new ones, so hopefully it is just a driver issue beings the card is not under warranty. I will keep ya posted on what happens.
