9800 GX2 Problem

1289 Views 31 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Rebel4055
I have an ASUS M3A78-EM board, which is ATI based. I am trying to install a Nvidia 9800 GX2 on it, and when I insert the card I can not get a signal from any of the onboard or card ports. Am I doing something wrong or do I need a Nvidia board? Also, I removed the ATI drivers before inserting the Nvidia.

Is the GPU new? Have you tested it in another system?
I've never had a problem installing my GX2 on other non sli boards. I know that's the problem. Seems like either the GPU or Motherboard is bad.
I have not been able to test the gx2 in another system, I bought it used so it could very well be messed up. I seems like it is on but does not have a picture. Also my psu should be able to run it. You said it will in fact run on a non-sli board though?
I remembered that some motherboards don't support the 9800GX2 without a bios update.

No, it doesn't work either.

If you uninstall the card does your onboard work again? Have you set the INIT first display to PEG?That sounds weird though that your onboard would not work either.

Yes, with the card uninstalled the onboard works again. Yes the PCI-e16x is set to be the main display.

I hate to say it but I am stumped. I have never heard of that happening before. I have tried to google it but to no avail, but I will keep researching though and see if I cant find a related issue.
in your bios make sure the setting for the pcie is on for the 9800gtx x2

The only setting I have is the main display setting.

I can say that by searching google that I have seen a lot of people running the GX2 on your board so you can rule out your board being incompatible. Its possible that your PSU might not be supplying enough power though as one poster stated, but thats a shot in the dark. It would really be nice if you had another PC to try this card in to see if it worked. Ill keep searching.

here is one user with a 9800GX2 on your board:

Set on board as main display and see if the gx2 will show up in windows.

Regardless of the settings, I get no signals out of any of the ports. If you uplug the 8-pin power and only half the card comes on, you can get video out of the onboard and windows finds a "generic VGA adapter."

what is that 550W Logisys Arcylic you're running?
I bet thats your problem.
Perhaps the board is bad. When you plug in the power and start the pc up. The power plugs should turn to green and on the back you should see a green circle led above the hdmi port that is active. Please also note and yes i know you said you tried all the ports on the video card. But it will only come on and show with the bottom port used which has the hdmi plug on the same rack.

If you aren't getting all the green leds then the card is bad or your power supply is not capable of pushing it.

The the power plugs are lighting green, the green circle is on, and you can see green leds inside the back vent.

Okay, I finally got the card to come on once and windows recognized it. But, when the power is cut (turning computer off) it will not come on again. I took it out and put it back in and it come on, it survived a restart, but it went off again after a reboot.
