Would there be much of an improvement in moving to two 9800GTX+ over the 8800GT's? I can get two of the GTX+ for $309 from the egg now and I'm expecting this to drop again when they are rebranded GT250.

No at most a 20% gain probably a little less though. For a real gain go SLI GTX 260 or a GTX295.

thanks for the replies guys!

the GT's really do everything I need them to. watching these prices fall it's just so tempting.

Yes there would be an improvement on performance, not too much of course. Maybe you can keep one of the 8800GT cards for PhysX if ou have a third PCI-E slot

And BTW If I were you i'd take a look at the GTX 260, it might be better to buy that one

yeah i bought a 2nd 9800GTX because i got a killer deal on it... SLI is a joke on these cards. In fact come to think of it, the entire 9800 series was a joke. I see 5 fps gains if that. you probably wont feel much of a difference from 8800GTs. I plan to step up one of the 9800GTXs and sell the other one.

I would suggest getting a GTX260 Core 216 55nm, since performance wise it runs about the same as a vanilla GTX280 and costs significantly less. I have also seen a GTX280 for pretty cheap... under 300.

I was looking into the same thing, 9800GTX+ SLI up from my 8800GT SLI and came to the conclusion that it is just not worth it.
