A couple Steam questions...How do I?

522 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Conley
I noticed on my games list on Steam there is an option to add more steam games, or add non steam games.

How can I tell if some of my games are Steam games or not? And if they are and they add them am I correct in assuming I can then DL them from Steam whenever I want?

Also, if I add a non steam game can you DL that game as well if you add it? If not, what's the point of adding non steam games?

List of games that can be tied to a Steam account. When you add them, you can DL them from Steam, just like a normal Steam game. The non-Steam game just adds a shortcut to the game.

For example, Prey can be added to Steam because the retail CD key can be attached to your account, but Crysis cannot, so I can only make a shortcut from the non-Steam game.

Thanks for that list man. Much appreciated. I'm gonna look through and see if I own anything I can add

Wow, kind of suprised thats the only games you can add. They sell more then that. Example, the original Call of Duty Modern Warfare they sell yet I can't add it to DL later

It will tell your friends that you are "In Non-Steam Game Eve Online" or whatnot. It's just a convenience to have your shortcuts in one place.

If it's a non-steam game you add all it does is make you able to launch it from Steam instead of the shortcut on your desktop. If it's a steam-game you'll be able to download and install it as if it was bought on Steam, can't resell it though.
You wont be able to download a non-Steam game if you add it to Steam. It just makes it easier to have all your games in one spot. Kinda like a creating a shortcut.

Go to Games> Add non-Steam games.. and a list will pop up of all the programs that Steams supports.
Steam can add a shortcut to anything. The ones in that list are only the ones Steam finds in registry. You can browse and specify any executable on your machine.

Launching a non-steam game through Steam also gives you the friends overlay. Most of the time.

Well, think about it. Steam gets no profit if you buy the game retail, but if you added it to Steam, you would use their servers for auto-updates, etc., costing them money that they never received.

Anyways, having your non-Steam games in Steam is nice, because you get the Steam overlay, so your friends can see what you're doing, chat, etc. Also, it makes Steam the central hub on your computer for ALL of your games.
