Hi, I'm about to power up my new system for the first time tonight, and I am at work, not doing work, making a checklist of things to doublecheck before pressing that button...

1) I have 2 1gb sticks of RAM. Right now I believe I have them sitting in the A1 and B1 slots. Both are either in both yellow slots, or both black ones, can't remember, but I know they're sitting in A1 and B1 slots. Is this correct for full dual channel mode?

2) I'll have 2 SATA drives and 1 regular ATA drive with the IDE cable. What jumper settings should I make sure of? Since the motherboard has a separate controller for the IDE, does the drive need to have a slave setting? Basically I want to set up both 320gb SATA drives in RAID 0 and then have the other regular 250gb IDE drive as a backup.

3) I have a pretty sweet external LG DVD/CD drive that connects through firewire/usb. Will I be able to install windows off this device? I'm guessing I'll have to find some sort of "boot from USB device" setting in the BIOS. I've mounted a regular CDROM device in the case just in case...but I'd rather not use it. It sucks.

4) I seated my heatsink, Scythe Infinity 2 days ago, but haven't powered the system on. I'll be able to get to it tonight though. I'm worried about the arctic silver 5. Should be OK right?

Any other "Make extra sure you do _______ or else" suggestions? This will be my first time building a computer from all separate parts....I'm excited, I don't wanna screw this up.

Greetings,

RAM is in Dual Channel Mode.

ATA Drive can be set to Master (only drive on cable).

Not sure about installing Windows from the External, is the internal optical drive that bad? If so I would remove it.

HSF sounds okay. Did you use a "pea-size" dollop in the center of the IHS, or did you spread a thin layer? Is the HSF fully seated?

Double-check the 4-pin ATX power cord, I have forgotten thisin the past . Double check all power and interface connections.

When you first power-on make sure all fans are spinning at the required RPM, especially the CPU and GPU fans.

Post back with what happens....sounds exciting!

Thanks for the help. I used a thin vertical line as per the new instructions for dual core with heatspreaders like the Arctic Silver website instructed.

This board has a bunch of SATA connections, and then one separate for RAID for the controller. What does this get connected to? The board doesn't come with any Y SATA cables. Does one get connected to the regular SATA inputs and the other to the RAID SATA controller?

This is the best motherboard manual I've ever seen, but it''s not clear on how to physically set up the RAID option.

I don't have a RAID setup on mine, so I am reluctant to give any advice. I would suggest that you start a new thread in the "Components" section, sub-heading "Hard Drives & Storage".

And I agree on the manual.

Yep...I just want to start it up. I can always configure the raid. It's 1030pm now and i get up every day at 6am...so at this point, I'll be psyched if I get the BIOS screen. I'd be crazy if I was gonna start installing windows and RAID....hmm.....

I'm worried I put the front panel headphone jack and power led reversed. I was always told black is ground, but...I'm goin from the picture on Asus's Q connector booklet...and black is not goin into ground...so...hmmm. That wouldn't fry my motherboard would it?

IT WORKED! All fans are go! The GPU fan seems to be spinning at an acceptable rate. All power, hdd, reset LED's are go! I didn't check the hard drives.... The only thing I didn't connect was the front audio connection which was a little confusing. I hit F4 to load default, and got a message about invalid something or other, or no master selected. please insert boot media in master drive and hit F4.

I may not have the correct jumper setting on the IDE CD drive. I didn't try putting in the windows CD. I just powered off at that point.

Oh, the CD drive is fine. It's just old and it doesn't match. The external LG is white and shiny and it burns very fast, can handle all DVD, CD's (except HD/bluray)

When I get home tonight I'll take a picture of the setup and post it in my build log thread, as I have some airflow concerns/ideas. I might be able to give Snerps Scythe Infinity mod a serious go with this setup!
