I've tried many programs, but they are all trial versions with limited options or a limit on the video length or size. Is there a decent freeware converter to translate other video formats to .avi?

I have a Hauppauge myTV mediaplayer and it doesn't seem to play much, or anything besides .avi files. Also, I've tried some films I've converted to .avi and they don't seem to run either.

Any idea, why converted files don't get recognized as .avi by the myTV player? Any suggestions for a good converter program? If there really isn't any freeware for my needs, I'd appreciate it if you'd suggest non-free programs.

Thanks a lot.

I use Winff for everything. Built in pre-configs for many devices. I'm pretty sure it will do .avi without a hitch.
