A new rig (2009!)

Hiya again folks @ OC.net
It's been nearly three years since the last time I posted here so it's about time contribute somehow...

The thing is, my sig rig is getting a bit old for these modern games and since (mid-end) hardware is pretty cheap these days, I'm thinking of assembling a new computer for mostly gaming purposes. This rig could certainly run new games on my old overclocks (FSB 377Mhz, multiplier x9, timings 4-4-4-12; GPU @ 621c/1512s/1008m) with some detail. Sadly though, my PSU is slowly but surely dieing so I had to drop all clocks back to normal due to recent instability issues :/

Anyways, the budget is 850-900€ (~$1300) and after carefully examining different i5/i7 rig possibilities I've come up with something like this:

CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Box 8192Kb, LGA1366 231.31 € (~$344)
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R, Intel X58, ATX, PCI-Express 156.87 € (~$233)
MEM: 6GB-KIT G-Skill DDR3 PC1600, CL 9 131.57 € (~$196)
GPU: XFX RADEON HD 5850 1GB DDR5 HDMI DISPLAYPORT PCI-E 2.0 220.36 € (~$328)
PSU: Corsair 750HX, 750 Watt 118.95 € (~$177)

Total: 859.06€ (~$1,280)

One thing that worries me in that list is the (un)availability of the new Radeons. My personal experience of G-Skill has not been very positive either as I've already had to return two pairs of DDR2 sticks due to bad sectors but since their DDR3 mems are constantly recommended again and again here, I'm willing to give them another go. I'll propably buy another 5850 for Crossfire later on next year if I feel the need for more power.

Oh, I was also told to build a new setup for my parents. They are not playing any modern games and need a preferrably quiet computer that'll last them through a couple of years. I'm going with something cheap yet efficient enough for them like Athlon II X4 620, Radeon 4870 512MB and 4gigs of DDR3 1333Mhz. Recommendations for that build would be appreciated aswell though I should propably create a separate topic for that in the AMD section...

I might not aim for maximum overclocks for that i7 build yet so unless someone can recommend a very good (and preferrably reasonably priced) cooler for that CPU I'll stick to the boxed one.

Any input will be very much appreciated as always!

I'd go with the Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9 thats what i'm throwing in mine

i think your new build looks great! as for the ram, i would give g.skill a try. yes, corsair has better street cred, but you end up paying a lot more for it.
Some updates:

I've decided to buy a separate CPU cooler after all and the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 seems to suit my needs best (no TRUEs there where I'll be ordering my stuff
). I also changed the mobo since the Gigabyte one has only 4 RAM slots (preparing for the future). G.Skill RAM also got changed to Corsair's as compuman145 suggested as their 3-kit was only 10€ more expensive. I also added a SATA DVD-Burner to the list.

So now my shopping list looks like this:

ASUS P6T, Sockel 1366, ATX, DDR3
Intel Core i7-920 Tray 8192Kb, LGA1366
Noctua NH-U12P SE2, Sockel AM2/AM2+/AM3/775/1366/1156
6GB-Triple-Kit Corsair TR3X6G1600C9 DDR3, CL9
XFX RADEON HD 5850 1GB DDR5 HDMI DISPLAYPORT PCI-E 2.0
Corsair 750HX, 750 Watt
Samsung SH-223C bare schwarz SATA

Total: ~1000€ (~$1500)

I won't be placing the order before mid-December propably so suggestions are still welcome! There will be lots of pics posted when the parts arrive just like last time

What model of the P6T are you getting???

If its the one for £175 then you might want to consider the Asus Rampage II

EDIT, Also, if you want to save a bit of money go for the TX series of PSU. They aren't modular but you can spend the money on something that'll give you BFB

You mean the mATX mobo Rampage II GENE? If I buy another card for Crossfire later on, my sound card won't fit in there
And the P6T I'm considering is 180€ so it's most likely the one you think it is
I might take the P6T SE though as it's 30€ cheaper and I don't see that many differences in the specs, other than no (official) SLI support.

I'd like to have a modular one as it naturally helps with the wiring but I'm definitely gonna consider that option if I go over my budget even more

It has quite a nice onboard sound card. What card you got at the moment, if its anything less than an xtremegamer then there isn't much point.

It's the one on my sig, a Creative X-Fi extrememusic. I'm not very familiar with the capabilities of a modern onboard audio chip so gotta research that a bit

Yeah I would suggest to go with the Corsair TX series too, its what I'm going with in the build which I ordered a few days ago. Why you be able to get the EVGA X58 SLI motherboard instead? If you want a good but cheaper SPU cooler, you could go with the Titan Fenrir. Other then that, its fine!

P.S. Help me with my first build! Need help choosing parts!

The store where I'll be placing my order has a very limited variety of motherboards (Asus, MSI and Gigabyte only for 1366). I'd prefer getting everything from one place and I've been using that shop for years now (ordered 5000+ € worth of stuff from there) and they are trustworthy.
