I put this guide together to inform every member of OCN to the ease with which they could fold on their machines as well as their family member PC's. I understand those who feel that Folding uses to much electricity to run 24/7, this is not a thread to discuss those feelings.
I understand there may be people who think this is too small of a contribution to bother with, IMO that is dead wrong. Folding in this manner is no different than purchasing Girl Scout cookies, donating to the Salvation Army red kettles or any other number of worthwhile organizations you support with whatever change you have in your pocket at the time. Stanford, OCN and I want the small change your computer has lying around.
Instead this is a thread to show you how you can contribute to folding without using much more electricity that you use while surfing the internet or leaving your computer on idling during the day. The sole purpose of this guide is to show people how easy [email protected] can be. How you can contribute to, what I consider, a worthwhile project, with a very tiny portion of your computers resources being consumed.
1. Go to Stanford and download this client.
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download
2. Install the client from the saved location.
3. Go to the start button and double click the fold at home exe.
4. When you see the multi colored protein in your System tray, right click and hit configure.
4a Add your username (I would suggest your forum name) and the team number 37726 close the configuration file.
5. If you wish to monitor your progress you can download FahMon. from http://www.fahmon.net/
To add the file location right click in the open white space and click add. For windows Vista users the location will be something like. C:\\Users\\Username\\AppData\\Roaming\\[email protected] e-x86\\ XP C:\\Programs\\[email protected]\\
If you wish this to start whenever the machine is running create a shorcut in your StartUp folder and it will launch automatically.
I am suggesting this client for several reasons (1 it only uses 25% of your CPU processing power so it will not interfere with anything you are doing and (2 the deadlines are extremely long and should be very easy for the average computer user to meet even with folding a couple of hours a day. This is a way to help the [email protected] research, without increasing your energy bill noticeably.
If OCN could get half of the member not currently folding involved and they averaged just 100 points per day, we would see our production as a site and team increase substantially. Not only that but you would assist the very important research that Stanford is performing in trying to understand how our bodies go haywire and turn against themselves.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you join Stanford's and OCN in a fight we must and can win.
