I'm upgrading from a really outdated AMD949 rig which has a hard time playing games from 4 years ago so its time for something new. I will be re-using my Antec 900 and 850w PSU, and possibly my ocz vendetta2 if it fits to save a few bucks.

I think this rig will fly but I'm not sure exactly which ram to get and am thinking of getting the coolit vantage water cooler. So what do you guys think? My main use will be for gaming and multimedia.

Looks great buddy

A few things:

You might be better of getting an i7 930 and OCing it, rather than the 950 which just has higher stock clocks.

Also, with the HDD's, I'd recommend 2 Samsung F3 500GB in Raid 0, then a 60GB SSD for OS. Use the Raided drives for storage.

Unless you really need the additional features of Pro, just get Win7 Home.

You might want to check the size of the 480 - it's possible you will struggle to fit it in the 900.

Everything else looks good, and yes it will be very fast, have fun with it!

EDIT: Your cooler will probably not fit it, since it was made before 1366... If you want water cooling without the effort I'd say get an H50/H70, but make sure you get some good fans for push/pull, Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm 1800rpm work well.

Otherwise, a Noctua D-14, Prolimatech Megahalems or TT VenX would serve you very well.

Thanks for the response

does the 930 overclocked better than the 950? the 950 is only $10 more right now thats the only reason I wanted it, but if the 930 outperforms it than I will change it. For the hard drives I can go with the 60gb ssd and just buy one storage drive for now and add another later. I only buy WD hd's!

I'm also thinking of changing the ram to-

I like the extra fluff in Win7 pro vs home so I think I will leave that alone.

I guess for the case I can try to fit it all in the 900 and if it doesnt fit I will look for something else, any recommendations on a case is appreciated too as I havent bought a new computer part in years.

In that case get the 950, by all means.

SSD looks great, and if you must, the F3 is lots faster though.

No, don't change the RAM, the Mushkin has much better timings that easily warrant the extra cost.

If it doesn't fit, get a CM 692 Advanced, excellent case

OK I changed the Ram back to the mushkin, although it isnt listed on the compatability chart for the Rampage board.

I will stick with the WD drives, I literally have never had one crash, still using a 120gb one that is 10years old! Besides, for storage I dont care that much about the speed, more about reliability. Also, I dropped down from windows ultimate to pro, i looked again at what the extra $40 gets with ultimate and its crap I would never use.

also added the corsair h70

So total is $1974.02 shipped to my door! Ouch!

to be exact they are $15 apart. The i7-930 is $284.99 while the 950 is 299.99. Since I'm dropping almost 2k on a rig i'm not going to sweat $15!

Ok...

Just a point on your WD drive obsession

I've never had any of our home Dells crash, BSOD, whatever.

Doesn't mean I'll just keep buying Dell.

Try something new, you might be pleasantly surprised!

This applies to everything btw, not just computers

When it comes to hard drives and my data I dont take chances! IMO Samsung has lost a lot of its great customer service it once had, and I own many of their products (I have 2 lcds, hdtv, and a camera from them). Their RMA process used to be great now its just mediocre. The camera I tried from them is junk, I should have stayed with canon!

I try new products all of the time, for instance, I used to be a die hard AMD fan, now my new build is an i7! I have never bought a Mushkin product until now either. I appreciate the recommendation for the Samsung drives which I wouldnt mind buying if I was strictly running my OS off of them, but again, for storage and longevity, I dont trust Samsung with important data. This isnt a Samsung bashing or anything either, they still make some of the best displays and I will continue to buy those products from them.

Thanks for the tip! I dont plan on going crazy with the overclock for now, if I can hit 4ghz stable I will be more than happy, which should be easy with this setup! I still have much to learn in the oc'ing department.

The h70 should be fine getting you to 4 ghz. I ran my build in an h50 first and at 4ghz I was at 70-75 on prime95 after 12 hours. So the h70 should do well. Make sure you can intake though, otherwise I'm not too sure how well it'll keep your CPU cool.

The 950 is almost the same price as the 930 because of then price drop which happened recently
