Hey guys and gals,

I'm going to delve into the world of Steam, since (with my impending divorce) I've suddenly got a lot of downtime on my hands. To be frank, I've never been into FPS's or MMO, in fact my only PC gaming has been the Myst series (and those spin offs) and Sims 1,2,3.

My favorite kind of games are old school NES/SNES rpgs (Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy III(VI), Breath of Fire, 7th Saga). Yeah, I know, boring to some, but its what I like. So, someone school me please.

Also, has anyone played Magic The Gathering Duel of the Planewalkers, the new version (not the kickarse Win 95 version...I miss that game)?

This is a pretty solid way to get started; entire Steam catalog sorted by Metascore:

Definitely take a look at Mass Effect 1 & 2, two of my all-time favorite games. The original Crysis games deserve a gander if you want FPSs. If you like a bit of a scare, Dead Space 1 & 2.

Beyond that, the Elder Scrolls games, as well as Fallout have gotten raving reviews.

I'm going to go enjoy the warm weather, maybe I'll come back and make more recommendations

I think I'll check the demo out...not being a game, how hard will it be for me to pick up with interface? I was considering picking up a "gaming" keyboard, like this:

I don't like "WASD" games...
I would save your money, doesnt take long at all to get used to "interface". First few weeks you will find yourself looking down at the keyboard, after that you'll be fine.

look no further than here.

This game has it all. The story is quite complex, quite long, and always keeps you interested and guessing. Honestly, Neither mass effect 1 or 2, or dragon age 1 or 2 have a story that has as many layers and complex and well told as The story told in nwn 2 and its expansion motb. It is probably one of the best stories told ever in an RPG, because they took the time to flesh out every portion of the world, everyone has a reason for what they do, whether good, bad, inbetween. Everyone has a story behind them, and it all adds together into the plot of the game. EPIC is all that can truly be said for it.

The combat is straight up DnD, doesnt get much better than that.

The writing for the NPCs throughout the game whether friend, enemy, or part of your party, its all fantastically done. They truly fleshed out each character and gave them more depth than you have seen in any recent RPG.

Huge amounts of mods adding new worlds to explore, or new spells, skills, classes, huge multiplayer worlds to explore. This game has it all.

Dragon age, mass effect 1 and 2 are all decent choices also, but if you are truly looking for an rpg that has a superb story. you want NWN2.

Torchlight was (is) great.

I wouldn't recommend Magicka for single player, but it's a blast with three friends.

As everyone else said, there's Mass Effect 1/2, Dragon Age 1/2, Fallout 3/NV, and Oblivion.

I really enjoyed Borderlands. If you enjoy loot-centric games you should like it, disregarding the fact that's it's an FPS above all else. Also great with three friends.

Mass effect 1 and 2, Dragon Age Origins, the Witcher, Bioshock, Neverwinter Nights 2, Baulders gate series (old, but very fun), Deus Ex (also older, but fantastic), if you like more open world RPGs the fallout 3 and fallout NV are very fun as well.

Also, it's not an RPG, but Crysis is really fun. Don't be afraid of WASD games, once you pick it up (honestly like 5 hours of gaming and it'll be second nature), it's the most intuitive control scheme on the planet.

Don't bother with a gaming pad, keyboard and mouse is FANTASTIC for gaming. The entire reason Microsoft canceled their xbox live and windows integration (xbox and pc players playing together) is because in testing the so so pc gamers were destroying the best of the xbox crowd, that's how fantastic pc controls are.
