About to order a 2nd 4850

I am doing this to hold me out until the 5870 is cheaper and has a nonreference design that will fit in my antec 300 without modding.

Even though i have a 512MB with a zalman cooler on it, i am going for a HIS 1GB in hopes of maybe a small increase.

Does this mean i should connect my monitor to the 1GB version as well as put it in the first Pci-E slot? Will this help at all?

Any other thoughts?

I'm pretty sure if you have crossfired disabled and have your monitor hooked up to the 1gb card, Then your computer will use 1gb of ram on the card.

but crossfire enabled will pull it back down to 512mb to match the lesser ram card.

In general though, crossfire 4850's will be great.

No it won't help, if you Crossfire them you use 512mb.

I always heard that the ram on the second card isnt even used anyways so why must it interfere with the 1gb of ram?

either way i am still getting the 1gb though because its a better card incase i use it sometime in the future.

the ram is used actually.

just think of it as a raid1 setup

both cards need the memory to store textures to render cooperatively on the same frame. that's why the memory is reduced to that of the smallest card.

the memory on the second card is an exact clone of that on the master card

O so really it doesnt double the amount of mem in crossfire, it is still 512mb then right?
