Earlier this month, HTC Hero completed a trio of releases with the third variant getting released on Verizon’s network as HTC’s Droid Eris. Launched at the $99 price point alongside the more expensive Motorola Droid, for the users looking to try out Android but not willing to shell out the cash for the bigger DROID. Those users can now stop thinking about paying $99, and get this phone for a measly sum of $30 from Walmart.

And get tied to the phone for 2 stinkin' years...

But a good phone nonetheless. Definitely a great alternative to Droid.

Believe it or not lots of people keep the same phone for two years because the discounts at the end of those two years outweigh the 250+ dollars to upgrade your phone consistently. Besides...there is probably not a phone(any) out now that doesn't do what a phone will in 2 short years.

People should in general buy cell phones based on contract prices not the price of the phone.
I hate that new customers get significantly better deals than people who have used Verizon for many years.

Yea, but you got a great deal when you became the new customer.... and if you didn't that's your own fault

Why phones are so expensive is beyond me. They are smaller than netbooks, use less materials but still more expensive.

Or you can call up Verizon, say that you're going to switch to any old carrier and they will suddenly throw the same if not better deals your way.

Yep good point.

For the record I wasn't bashing the deal as the troll accused me of. Compared to BB and Verizon, it's a much better price, just stinks being tied to a phone for so long given how quickly new phones come out.

^Thanks, BD.

If you really wanna save money then obviously the eris, but the Droid is a kick ass phone if you can spend $200 on it. Huge screen, fast, and a growing app store.

I can afford to drop $200 but it would be a family plan and the rest of my family wouldn't.
The droid eris is a great phone which in many ways is better than the droid with android 2.0. HTC's sense UI is in many ways more advanced than the stock android 2.0 but either way they both are great phones. The droid is faster of course but im sure the Eris will have the option of upgrading from 1.5 firmware to 2.0 soon. Lets hope so. I guess HTC just needs time to port Sense UI over to 2.0.
