IBM warns of firmware problem with Barracuda ES.2

Quote:

According to IBM, this issue is caused by a hard drive firmware issue that allows the drive’s “event log†pointer to be set to an invalid location. This condition is detected by the drive during power up, and the drive goes in to failsafe mode to prevent inadvertent corruption to or loss of user data. As a result, once the failure has occurred user data becomes inaccessible. As a result, once the failure has occurred user data becomes inaccessible.
The condition only occurs after a power cycle and not during runtime.......

Oops, I hope OC.net doesn't have one of these servers. that would be too bad.

Just don't turn the servers off.

This has been known about for quite a while and Seagate has issued firmware updates. Furthermore, not all ES.2 drives are affected. Only certain serial numbers. Seagate has a web applet that checks your serial number and tells you if you are affected and need to update. Luckily, neither of my ES-2 drives are affected.
dam one of my server is running 4x IBm 750's in a raid 5 time to run weekend backup early lol
Better leave those servers on for the rest of their lives..
Another excuse not to switch my NAS off
Although my ES's have a diff firmware, so not really bothered
