Opera labs announced the availaiblity of alpha version of their latest Opera 10 browser which includes a new featured called “Turboâ€. Opera Turbo, is a server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections by compressing network traffic. This not only make you surf faster, but also lowers the cost of browsing when you are on a pay per usage plan.

Cool stuff Opera ! Now somebody will copy this and make an add on for Firefox like they did with Speed Dials.

I's settle for some compatability/stability fixes and a smaller memory footprint.
sounds like they took there mobile browser technology and enabled it in their desktop clients
Has any one tried it?

I'm using it now, and its awesome! I'm on a fairly slow connection. 34kbps ish.

My only complaint is that there is some small graphical glitches but thats due to the compression.
Personally im waiting for their new Javascript engine codnamed "Carakan" to get put in the Alpha (or Beta or whaatever) builds, ive used the 2 or 3 that have been publicly available and its definitely better than Opera9.6X already

ive been an opera user for years and back in the day when i switched FF etc were no faster than Opera, however now they have overtaken it by a fair bit and hopefully this new engine lives up to its promise for some very nice speed improvements

What is Carakan?

Carakan is Opera's new JavaScript engine. It's still in development, but is already 2.5 times faster than our Opera 10 alpha engine (which itself is 30% faster on real websites than previous versions of Opera). Some aspects are between 5 and 50 times faster!
So its looking pretty good considering Presto 2.2 is already faster compared to 2.1 which is in the 9.6X builds

Yeah thanks. It's pretty quick but images all look like crap. Must be part of the compression.

note: It also doesn't work well with Gmail themes.

What's with everyone hoping the competition dies? Less to compete against means less reason to improve. Loyalty to a product is kind of foolish IMHO

Regarding the memory footprint, honestly I've noticed that compared to FF3 on Vista, Opera uses less memory when I have multiple tabs open (which I always do). That having been said, if there was some way to mix the two, I'd be a happy camper.

Opera's Themes
Opera's Speed Dial
Opera's Search Creation
Opera's Handling of History, etc...
Opera's Ctrl+Enter Wand function
Firefox's In Page Search
Firefox's Downloads (or the Download bar addon)
Firefox's Grammar and Spellcheck
Firefox's Right Click Login/Password function

If anyone knows how to combine all of those I'd have my perfect browser

i DLed this last night after one of my friends who is an opera fan boy told me about it, i still prefer FF3 and opera really doesnt feel faster to me.

I hope Opera dies because all they do is whine and ***** to the EU about how Microsoft is unfair including Internet Explorer with their own OS. Also, FireFox has many more features and customization options.
