Acer Aspire One

Hmmm.....

Well I've gotten to thinking.. I am rather sick of using a laptop. I can't install a graphics card, which it sorely needs. I want to upgrade a bunch of things on it, but i cant - guess why? - Damn Laptop.

What im thinking, and bear in mind that money is never in abundance for me. Is that i could get myself a netbook, and re-instate my tower (specs on me profile).

Now I've been looking at Acer's Aspire one, with the 1.5ghz Atom, 1gb of ram and 120gb of hard disk, and thinking that it could probably replace my portable on a day to day basis, and it has some real modding potential.

Stock, it's pretty good for the day to day tasks, but im wondering if the atom has any potential for Overclocking.

Also, i've been looking at some youtube vids:

Now i think i can inprove on the first, by getting an old heatsing and taking a hacksaw to reduce the hight on it.

Any thoughts?

its a good netbook. idsay go for it. then use desktop for more processor intense things. cant oc but its not worth it. wouldnt open it up either, void warranty
Hmm I would go for a MSI Wind instead. Better build quality and with the new BIOS you can OC it to 1.9ghz which will give you a boost. Though its another $100 or so

Unless you're in a hurry, keep an eye out for display models at your local office supply store, or anywhere else they have systems out on display. I picked up a nice Sony dual-core with 2GB RAM for $450, and it has the brightest display of any laptop I've seen..

Worth a go, my current machine is a factory return, fixed by dell, cost 200 quid (About $400) for a machine that's seen very little action.

I like what im hearing about them certainly. I think im prepared to take the risk with the warranty as i need to upgrade the memory anyway.

Where does the problem with overclocking come from. Can i run a firmware patch to overcome it for example?

Hmm.... 1.9ghz.... worth a thought.

I'd suggest the Advent 4211 (MSI Wind Clone).

I have one, and I much rather the slightly larger screen, and the ease of upgrading the RAM without voiding warranty...
