Right now on newegg the A700 are just 20 bucks more than the Ad700's. Whats the difference between these two sound wise? One is closed and one is an open back but thats all I know. I'm going to use these for gaming only no music, so I want to get the one that sounds better for gaming.

AD700s. They're open, so they'll leak, but the soundstage is wider. You get less bass, but if you're like me and wanted them simply for gaming, those are the ones to get.

What is your budget? What type of music do you listen to? What is your source? How important is bass?

AD700 (32 Ohm) are considered better for gaming (sound stage) and will work well with just about any source.
A700 (64 Ohm) have better bass, and lose a little in the sound stage.
It seems most people would take an AD700 over the A700.
As the A700s have higher Ohm rating, they might benefit more from a headphone amp.

64 OHM's is nothing to worry about. My Xonar drives them just fine. If anything my sound card is a bit overboard for them. Now, my HD800's on the other hand definitely require an amp because of their much higher impedance.

I hate to jack a thread but, I have tax refund (IE: GAMING EQUIPMENT TO BUY) Coming up..

I have (since my ATh-ES7's) considered getting a pair of A700's.

I have seen a number of threads discussing one pair over the other and at one point in time I saw the A700's more recommended for gaming and at others I've seen the AD700's recommended.

I understand the open backed ones do provide better sound stage.. but, lets just say I plan on listening to disturbed or rammstein on a somewhat regular basis..

How much sound stage am I losing?

For that matter as far as gaming headphones and sound stages go.. How will any of these compare to a relatively cheap open backed headset for the purpose of gaming.

Like the others said, A700 for more bass, and to me a more claustrophobic feel. AD700 for a good soundstage, more comfortable, great for positional audio (games).

I own both, and I wear the AD700 all the time, almost never my A700s.

I am not sure if the ad700 would be enough bass...

I am by no means a bass whore or anything but, I do think that if a pair of headphones were lacking in bass.. songs like disturbed may feel almost incomplete...

sadly i can't afford both.

Get the A700s and an Asus Xonar DG sound card, or DX for a few dollars more.

I don't exactly have room for a sound card.
Pick up an external DAC than. It will plug into your computer via digital audio out or USB.

However, I do have a pci slot free at the bottom.

Is this the card you were referring to earlier?

I don't believe there was a dx version available.

unless that card can be squeezed between two gpu's...
The capacitors will more than likely make the card to wide to slide between 2 GPU's in XFire.

So it looks like I have to stick with the DG version instead of dx.

Now, can anyone try to give me a comparison of the difference in sound stage between the AD700s and A700s?

Are there any other (sub 170$>) headphones which maybe a better alternative? Sound stage is pretty important but, I think (and could be wrong) that loss of bass would be pretty bad..

I am not the best when it comes to labeling things... but, I know that one set of cheapo gaming headphones I have is open backed.. and some sounds are almost indistinguishable.. or they sound borderline muffled.. EX a gun fires and instead of a "BOOM" its more of a "THUD". I am wondering if maybe its a loss of bass that causes this..

By contrast my ES7's do lack lack the same directional sense the cheapo set give me.. but, footsteps are more distinct.. the fire of the gun is more pronounced and it is funny because, although i have more trouble telling from where I have a much easier time telling if someone is walking.

I would like to have the best of both worlds.. I want pronounced sound and I want the sense of direction..

if there is another pair out there, I am not hellbent on just A700 or AD700 but, those have been in my line of view for a long time now.

The Audio Technica M50's are going to be a better alternative and will offer a bit more bass than the A700's counterpart. If you can splurge, I would highly suggest the Beyerdynamic DT770 32 Ohm version over anything else that has been suggested in this thread.

They offer more bass and are more suited for your musical taste. They retail for $250 but can be had easily at your price point if found used. Hit up Head-Fi.org if your interested.

Will check them out. I am hoping there is some good medium between bass and sound stage.

So list to check now.
