Add another 4890 ? or go DX11 ?

Ok my 4890 handles anything my pc can throw at it maxed @ 1080p (i would like the min FPS in crysis to be a bit better though)

At xmas I'm thinking of upgrading, should i get a 2nd 4890 for 135 euro ? It's the same as my card just not the Sapphire OC card so not sure if it would OC to the same clocks as my card.

OR

Upgrade to a DX11 card ? Maybe a 5770 for 129 euro, I know it's not as fast as my 4890 but i could add a 2nd soon after and could possible be the better "future proof" option.

OR

Wait a bit, keep saving and get a 5870 FEB/March

OR

Just sit tight with what i have and wait for some more demanding games, as all i struggle with now is crysis even though i have it maxed 4xAA high spec configs / ToD's / hi-res textures etc i get 20 - 30 FPS.

Edit: If i do upgrade i won't be upgrading my GPU again for at least 6 months (Hopefully a year)

I'd go for another 4890 and Crossfire them
There's no rush for DirectX11 right now.

^This

You're not going to be seriously hurting before March as far as gaming goes and settling for a lesser DX11 card just to have one now is going to give you buyer's remorse.

[...edit] ...and doubling down on a dead horse is a fools bet.

IMO, just wait a bit... after the DX10 flop, I've decided to be a bit more hesitant in my card purchases. Hardly any games make use of the current hardware available, so why bother having the best? You'll end up saving yourself money by waiting and there's no real downside to it. I personally won't be considering DX11 cards until I see some games make use of it (BF:BC2 is the one I'm waiting to see). Retrospectively, I still think I would have just been fine sticking with my 8800 GT

Yeah me too, I wasn't all that happy my old 8800 couldn't run dx10 which is why I'm not sure what to do this time. I'm also waiting for BC2 and would love to play it in DX11 (if it does turn out to be worth it, and DX11 is looking ok so far)

I go for the last option. Keep what you have, It is more then enough presently.
Get the other HD4890 if you're not pleased with your performance. Two HD4890s beats a HD5870 in every case.

Direct X 11 has already been released. We've seen Dirt 2 as well as benchmarks comparing DX11 appearance/performance. In my opinion, DX11 is fail. Why? There's not enough of a difference between it and the older versions of Direct X to justify the costs of the cards. A 5850 is a small step above the 4890, yet I see them going for 320 plus shipping on the egg, while 4890's are 160 used here on OCN. That's less than half the price, and you can grab two 4890's for less than a single 5850 and boast better perfomance than a 5870. I'm actually selling my 5870 due to this.

In conclusion, I say you stick with your single 4890 for now because it demolishes nearly all of the hardest games to run, and just wait for Fermi.

i wouldsay depends on what u expect out of dx11, the more i think about it, is graphics more important then gameplay ?

i would say get another 4890 if u care more about gameplay, if u want better visuals save up for xfire 5770 or xfire 5850, just depends on your budget and what u actualy expect out of dx11, cant beat these 5xxx performance though there on the ball

I really feel this being put off about DX11 because of DX10 is overblowing things. DX11 is about as sure a bet as comes along. Why?

1: DX10 was the flop. Usually after a big flop comes the really successful thing.
2: The reasons why DX10 was a flop don't exist with DX11.

In fact, the conditions surrounding DX11 are the diametric opposite of the conditions DX10 had to deal with. DX11 is supported on two OSes. A: Vista which is all ready on many machines can be seen a big advantage over what DX10 had to deal with at it's start when Vista just started out and few wanted to adopt it early on. B: Windows 7, which everybody loves, in part because it is the thing after the flop which was Vista.

3: DX11 is faster than DX10 and things that are faster get adopted faster.

You can be skeptical, but DX11 has the wind at it's back.

By the time DX11 is taking over the marker you will change that 5770. Get the second HD4890 and use the raw power. Check out the Dirt 2 DX 9 vs DX 11 comparison and you will see that a game advertised as DX11 has only a few differences. People drinking the kool aid thought this was a pure DX11 game ... and it is not.

Cheers all, been a help, so i think I'm gonna just grab another 4890 at xmas.

Rep Given.
i think it really comes down what you are happy with. Me personally, i have a 4890 in which i just bought, and have windows xp which means i cant even run dx10 games and I am happy with the way crysis and other games look on dx9. If you are becoming tired of the way your games are looking or have a thirst for more eye candy, i think you should hold off and buy a 5000 series card. If you just want more FPS and are happy with the games look, id buy another 4890.
At this stage of the game I'd get a DX11 card.....unless I got a upper end ATI 4XXX or NVidia 2XX at a very good price. But even then.....it just feels pointless to get a card that is on the verge or already replaced by the next generation.
