Adding drive to Raid(0)

578 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  kmount4
I have another Raptor to add to my array, I was hoping to ghost to an image on my storage drive - install the new raptor so I have a 3 raptor raid(0) and then ghosting the image back to the array...

Anyone know if that will work?

So you want to ghost an image from your storage drive to the new raptor and add it to the array? You can only have two drives in RAID 0, try RAID 5...
However, it is possible to have three drives in RAID 0, it's a tricky process and you'll have to rebuild the array from scratch.
Here's how:
  • Clone the existing 2-drive array to another (4th) disk
  • Format and rebuild the array from scratch in RAID BIOS
  • Clone the 4th disk back to the 3-disk RAID 0 array
so you can only RAid 0 two drives no matter what kind that are at once?
ummm... No you can do RAID-0 with any number of drives greater than two.
Oh and to answer your original question. Yes that would be the way to do it, although personally I wouldn't buy anymore raptors.
what i meant was if i have 4 1tb drives i couldnt Raid 0 them all together..what would i have to do

If that is the case it can't be done RAID 0 only works
with 2 drives. You can do any number of even drives but
each pair will be a separate array.

Not true man, I'm running a three disk raid0 array right now...

Correct!

And whats wrong with raptors?

I apologize for the incorrect information.

It has been several years since I have had a RAID
array and my setup would only do 2 drives.

They are over priced. Granted I have an older
Raptor 150 but my Caviar Black 1TB is actually
faster by about 10% because of the higher density.

cant knock an older drive compaired to a brand new WD black. OP which raptor is it anyways? a Raptor SataI ,Raptor X,or the new VelociRaptor?
Yeah.. I was scratching my head at that first reply....

They are all 36 gig Sata Raptors - getting a bit old now but I was given that latest one.

It's a good chance to do a low level diag and refresh the surfaces at the same time. I was initally worried that a ghost image would only see the stripe as a physical entity without complete interaction with the Raid Bios, and try to write it back to only 2 drives, but I realise all that sort of work is done in the Raid controller.

Cheers for the help

should work fine! just make sure if you ghost your drive from "in OS" that the bootable disk can detect the arrays etc first..

im going to assume because my perc 5/i is a "server grade card" that my acronis home edition wont see it..

thought about contacting acronis and asking for a custom bootable DL.. as big as this thread is. i hope they wont ignore this big of a minority for "using server grade hardware for PCs"

now that ive "gabbed a bit" basically. make sure it sees it first.. id have a heart attack if i had even 1KB of "wanted" data that i lost

I'd make an image then make a back up image to ghost

My last RAID 0 array was with 6 hard drives - great burst speed, well worth it.

Uberjon, we use Acronis TrueImage Enterprise at our business. There are two types of bootable discs that you can create (they can be both be created at the same time for 1 ISO). They have a full bootable disc, and a "safe mode" boot disc. The Safe Mode disc includes drivers for raid, and AHCI, however, it does not include drivers for networking. So if you have your image, it will need to be on some sort of removable media like a large capcity flash drive or external HD.

Hope that helps.
