Administrator Password, Win XP, Gateway FX530S

1036 Views 19 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  TheSubtleKnife
To make a long story short, I have a Gateway FX530S that will not properly boot into windows in regular mode or safe mode. So I figured I will run a chkdsk as restoring to factory defaults is trying to be avoided. Problem is there is an administrator password on the operating system and my friend does not ever remember making one. Any way around this before we resort to a factory restore?

TRK Has a password reset feature. Just check the documentation on their site.

This was from a quick search of their forum

The only way really is to crack it.

One other way is to use this method, which does sometimes work.

Orphcrack.

There is a tiny linux boot disk that's sole purpose is to reset the SAM user's passwords. I'll try and remember, I used it a couple years ago at work when we had XP Pro machines..

EDIT: Here it is.. Download, burn, re-write... Done!

Ophcrack is also very good.

You can use Hirens boot cd and then boot off it to use Active Password changer. Active password changer will let you reset the Administrators password to null "will just be blank" as well as any other account on the machine.

You can find Hirens as an iso download around the net just google it.

Fixed.

I have used Ophcrack myself just to see how good it is. It finds my brothers passwords easily, but when it comes to people mixing numbers in like me, it fails. So if the password was easy, this will crack it and tell you what it is. Its just like running any old linux live cd. I believe it uses Rainbow Tables to get the job done. But thats kinda why it fails against harder passwords

Ophcrack, Hirens, TRK is there one that can be considered the best?
Do you have an ubuntu live CD?

Here is an excellent guide for resetting your windows password with Ubuntu.

sysinternals has a bootable cd that allows you to view and change the admin passwords.

Never mind. Looks like MS made it so you have to have a VOL License which will allow you to download ERD Commander which is now knows as the Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolkit
A tad off topic but if chkdsk cannot fix my problem (assuming I get by the password) are there any other options before a restore?
there could be something in TRK.

Do you think this is virus related?

Yes, this is almost 100% guaranteed to be virus related.....

The Easy Way:

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

Download the BOOTDISK iso, Burn to CD or USB Drive, reboot off that and pwn the password. Simple. Works from NT up to Win7. Quickly hack any computer at work with this thing... oh no not like that, I'm the IT guy.

EDIT: As far as the errors, if chkdisk doesn't work try "sfc /scannow" (without quotes)

Then if you try the trk disk, be sure the computer has a wired ethernet connection. Then use the command "updatetrk" to update the virus scanners. Then use the command "virusscan -a". This will scan the hard drive(s) with all of the included virus scanners. Should help cleaning the machine out for you

Excellent, much appreciated.

On a side note, a chkdsk is in progress. I contacted my friend and told her to go through all the paperwork she has that is related to the PC and sure enough there was her administrator password that she claimed did not exist.

I do greatly appreciate all the valuable information provided, reps awarded.

I will update this thread once chkdsk is complete (or soon after). Hopefully it will be to say "chkdsk fixed it".

My vote is for Ophcrack/Hirens. Both have excellent features.

If I remember correctly, Hirens has a password removing feature (I think from ERD Commander) so I would check that out. If you wanna crack the password use Ophcrack.
