Greetings folks,
I've been off OCN for a while, traveling for work and whatnot, but I always know where to come for advice on tech purchases. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
I've been without a computer of my own for a bit over 4 months now, and it's starting to wear on me. Now that the initial Windows 7 craze is over, some really great products are starting to come available, and the time is right to buy. My priorities in a notebook are as follows:
- Portability. I travel a lot, and I already carry around 100+ pounds of gear everywhere I go.
- Battery life. I can't always get to a power outlet where I am, and I need to be able to do my work without being tethered.
- Value. The proverbial bang for the buck, I don't want to spend any more than absolutely necessary to get what I need.
- Hardware capabilities. I need to be able to run video-embedded PowerPoint presentations, and I'd like to be able to watch movies in my off time.
Considering those things, I've narrowed my search down to three models.
First, the
Eee PC 120n, due to be released in mid-December. It's a 12.1", Ion-powered netbook that should be priced at or around $500. Battery life is expected to be about 5 hours.
Second, the
Asus UL30vt, due to be released on 05 December. It's a 13.3" notebook with a 210m GPU and CULV processor, priced at about $800. Battery life is expected to be between 9 and 10 hours.
Last, the
Asus UL80vt, available now. It's a 14" notebook with specs simliar to the UL30vt, but it weighs in over a pound heavier and has an integral CD/DVD drive for about $825. Battery life is expected to be between 9 and 10 hours.
Considering my priorities listed above, what would you recommend? Is there something else that I should consider, either in my priorities or my choices?
Would those of you who own a notebook without a CD/DVD drive be willing to sacrifice the portability of the first two options in order to gain the integral optical drive of the third?
Thank you all for your time and consideration.
EDIT: Sorry about the Amazom.com and blog links, folks. I'd prefer to order from Newegg, but they don't have any of my options in stock or available for pre-order, and the specs aren't up on the Asus website yet. Work with what you got, know what I mean?
EDIT 2: Found specs from Asus!
UL30Vt,
UL80Vt, and
1201n.
