Well a q9400 will blow an athlon (not phenom ) x4 630 out of the water in terms of performance, but you are correct in that AM3 is still relatively new while Intel's 775 socket is nearing the end of it's road.

so, my suggestion would have to be split based on two things:

1. If you have only about $200 to spend then my suggestion would be to opt for the q9400

2. If you are willing to spend more like $300 then I would go for a nice AM3 board and a phenom II X4 955 in a heartbeat
