Right now my other PC has a X300 SE inside it.

I would like to purchase a new GPU for folding ... seeing as they are absolutely killing it in PPD!

I was thinking something along the lines of:

8800GT, GSO
9600GT, GSO
8800GTS, GTX (320,640,740) versions

What would you guys reccommend? whats the best PPD? 3d performance isnt critical...but ill take it. around $140-150 ish, ebay style as I have no rep here to trade/buy

the proc is an e2180.

Regards,

RLA

you can get a used 8800gt for 85$ shipped right now in the for sale section. That's the best bet, you can sometimes find people selling 9600gso for $65, but with shipping, that would end up close to 80 anyway, so my recommendation would just be the 8800gt, just make sure you have ~15A on the 12V rail, and enough power connectors for the power supply.

What about the 260 in your dig? Why not fold on that?

With your budget I would do two 8800GS's or one 9800GTX/8800GTS 512 if your psu can't cut running 2 cards.

I second what Corky said.

Even if your rep is low, you can still make purchases in threads that are already made, you just can't create new threads in the sale/wanted section. But I would say fold on the GTX 260, and buy a 9800GTX or such. There are two sales going on where they are $110. I will get the links.

Ya with that budget I would get the 9800GTX. It does some serious PPD for a 110 dollar card.

Because it is the same thing as a 9800GTX+ and those are readily available in the used section? And how are you pulling 7K with it? The new drivers?

The GTS250 can be had on Newegg for $107 AMIR... or it was over the weekend when I purchased one. Not sure if the deal is still active or not.

the GTS 250 is the best bet for you budget, especially considering how cheap you can get them new. This card will put out the same ppd as a 9800gtx+, 9800gtx, 8800gts 512mb as they are all basically the same.

Thanks guys - will be looking into it! Much appreciated

And Dorkleson, I am folding on the 260 - I just figured the other PC could be crunching too...

Bang for $$$, all the cards that have been mentioned are great folders. It's just a matter of finding one on sale somewhere.
I found a 9600GSO (96 SP) for $50 after MIR.
Basically, find a card that gives you the most stream processors for the least amount of money.

Or if you reference PPD logs of different logs, find a PPD:$$ ratio that suits you best.

I did that, and it was between 9800GTX+ and GTS250, but once I stumbled across the rebate for the GTS250, it gave it the edge.
