AGP HD3850 for folding

365 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  skugpezz
Im thinking about buying one of these cards because Ive already got a complete system (agp and socket 478) that just needs a reasonable GPU and it can start folding away (however minimally)

So my question is this...what do I need to know about this card? Driver issues? Overheating issues? Overclocking issues?

just don't get it... bad card for folding... save your money for a better folding rig
Well it's going to be slower than a pci-e slot:

How about AGP vs PCIe slots?

Performance of the GPU client is best with the board in a PCIe x16 slot. An x8 or x4 slot will cause some degradation in performance as the communication path between the CPU and GPU will be slower. AGP hardware is supported, but overall performance will be lower than PCIe boards because of a slower CPU to GPU connection. PCIe v2.0 is only marginally faster than PCIe.

If you really want to then yes. But as others have said you could get a cheap mobo/gpu and Dual core for the price. Why another thread?
Bur. Ive got a whole system ready to go it just needs a card =/

In that case, what is the best card, AGP, just to have for this system? I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a system someone could play wow on or what have you.

I just dont like the idea of wasting an awesome overclocker.

that system probably won't very good for folding... as a secondary rig, its fine... the best AGP card money can buy right now is the 3850... I warn you though, because its outdated tech, they are more expensive than standard PCI-E cards...

That's true about the price, but thats fine. Good way to spend a hundred bucks imo. It could wind up in the tip jar at the coffee shop, or in a bottle or two of hennessey. Or in wheels for the car. Or in the bank. T

he whole point is to make this system do something worthwhile, because it surely isnt worth spending the time and effort trying to part it out right now, considering there is so much I can still do with the system in terms of learning more about overclocking and case modding etc.

Maybe it will be the infamous "linux lobbyist" desktop I keep in the living room to show people the 'red pill of microsoft' so to speak.

Matrix reference =x
