Air pockets in the loop, and... Foam in the reservoir...

3731 Views 23 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Supacasey
For the past few days whenever I turned on my computer I'd hear a gurgling noise. Never payed much attention to it until today when I decided to look more closely at the tubing, and I could see quite a few, large air bubbles speeding through the loop as well as foam at the top of the reservoir.

The only thing I could think of that could have caused the bubbles to form in the loop would be that I moved recently, and maybe it shook up enough in transport to mix the water with the air in the res to create some bubbles, and perhaps the foam.

I'm letting it bleed now, anything else I should do?

Good god man, you mean you didn't remove your loop in transit?

As long as it's fully bled when you're done, I don't see anything else you'll need to do.

I made a thread about it before I moved, and everyone said I'd be fine as long as I was 100% sure I was leak proof, heheh...

Will bleeding it remove the foam as well? I've never really heard of distilled water foaming...

It's just tiny air pockets bubbles getting churned up from the pump, so I guess not technically foam.

Damn, good point... It's gonna have to bleed for a while...

Coming from the man with stock CPU cooling?

Detergent is a surfactant and when used in small amounts (i.e. a couple drops for a good sized loop) it actually helps it bleed faster. Ira-K is the one that, to the best of my knowledge, started the whole detergent in loops thing and many people in the watercooling community have great respect for Ira-K. He experimented with and perfected a watercooling mix.

It is pretty much:
  • Distilled Water
  • PT-Nuke (amount listed on bottle)
  • Detergent (a couple drops)
  • Glycerin (around an ounce)
I believe that is for one gallon of the stuff. He also says that too many additives will decrease performance. That mix bleeds fast and doesn't grow gunk. It is also suppose to perform better than straight distilled but any improvement would be negligible.

I personally run an open loop with quite a bit of anti-bacterial dawn detergent in it and I DO GET FOAM but since it is an open loop it doesn't hurt and it never makes it through the lines, it stays in the open resevoir. I have not experienced a decrease in performance, though.

This is not a flame, I'm simply asking that you know what you're talking about before you post.

foam is technically tiny pockets of air i think you mean.

Glycerin, decrease performance.....

you only need it for mixed metals and sub zero.

Does "open loop" mean with a resivoir and "closed loop" mean without resivoir?

I have seen Ira-k post before on the detergent issue.
open means open to the air while closed is an "air-tight" setup.
just wait, all air should be purged from the system automatically.
Can someone describe the loop that would have the best chances at having bleed and fiil problems? My thought would be no res. and a odd pump placement.

In other words what should be avoided if you want to stay out of the OP's situation?

Well... My loop isn't bad, it just got really shook up and formed bubbles. I made 2 or 3 threads about a good loop setup before I actually made it and the majority thought my loop was perfect.

During the move, your res was probably not topped off. So when you moved it, the air from the res got into your tubing, then traveling to the block and rad. Same thing happen to me when i moved mines to a lan party. Just bleed the system again and you will be fine.

+1

And heck ya traveling with the system filled. If I didn't travel with the system filled, I'd end up bleeding my pc on a GOOD gaming week 2-10 times lol

Yeh no need to empty your loop when moving it around, in the car keep it vertical if you can, will stop air escaping into your rad/blocks etc. As said, just bleed it for a while and all will be fine!

BTW i did not know Ira-K was female...
